Road rage

Post by Shifty »

Australian drivers are getting angrier and they're not shy about showing other motorists exactly how they feel.

Figures released by insurance company AAMI shows driver aggression is at an all-time high with acts of revenge becoming increasingly popular.

The figures show 68 per cent of drivers had been tailgated at some point, while 32 per cent said they had been followed.

The number of motorists who considered tailgating to be an acceptable response to road rage had more than quadrupled since AAMI first canvassed road rage among drivers in 1997 when just five per cent said they had been angry enough to tailgate another driver.

Alarmingly, one in seven drivers surveyed said they had been forced off the road, while one in 10 have had their car wilfully damaged as a result of an altercation with another motorist.

Two-thirds, or 69 per cent, said they had been verbally abused, while four in five, or 83 per cent, had received rude hand gestures.

More than half (57 per cent) of those surveyed admitted to gesturing rudely or yelling at another driver when they had done something dangerous or rude.

Of those, 83 per cent thought the payback was justified.

"While many of us have sworn or gestured rudely at other drivers from time to time, it is completely unacceptable that one-fifth of drivers have become so angry with the actions of another motorist that they have resorted to tailgating," AAMI public affairs manager Geoff Hughes said.

"If this wasn't bad enough, 60 per cent of those drivers thought tailgating as retribution was entirely justifiable."

"The rise in road rage is worrying in itself, however, also concerning is the increasing number of motorists who believe this sort of retaliation is entirely acceptable," Mr Hughes said.

What people fail to realise is that 95%+ of road rage incidents occur because people can't drive.

On Sunday my girlfriend and I were riding (two bikes) from Norman Park to Acacia Ridge. I was cut off once, she was cut off three times. Yesterday, she had her license test and was cut off once on the way there. The icing on the cake was DURING HER TEST whilst she was ONE OF FIVE BIKES IN A LINE, ALL WEARING FLUORESCENT VESTS someone pulled straight out in front of her.

Topping it off, when I picked her up from her license test (passed, but not able to ride alone until you take the slip to QLD Transport) we were sitting in a turning lane on Ipswich Road and a guy pulled out of a driveway and stopped HORIZONTALLY ACROSS TWO LANES as he couldn't get into the turning lane from that angle and decided to sit there and block traffic until the light went green... after a solid two minutes of blocking traffic he finally changed his mind and drove off.

I'm not so sure that road rage is the problem...

100% correct Shifty
ppl get taught how to get a licence..NOT how to drive or control a vehicle
they have NO idea how to control 1½T of metal ...at 60 or 100kmh
and then when its wet.....

try getting a heavy vehicle or endorsed licence..you won't get one til you prove you can drive one
and bikes? .....well we all know you go through hoops

passing a proper DRIVING test should be compulsory before getting your licence for a cage

cheers

That's true, but aside from all that business... people can't follow simple functions... indicating, paying attention to the road, looking before you pull out/change lanes, giving way, being courteous, etc. All those things are part of a license and much more fundamental to driving than knowing emergency skills (which people also don't have). People should be re-tested every 3-5 years... I know my mother would fail.

Shit even this morning I dropped the gf at the airport... as I was merging into traffic a car a good 40 metres behind sped up to 120km/h to stop me getting in front of them, even though there was a huge gap. being in the Barina there wasn't a lot I could do to stay in front. She then remained that one car in front of me for the next few km.... so she's made up no ground but pissed me off hugely by being rude, created a situation where if I wasn't a capable driver I might have merged right into her, etc, etc... all unnecessary and I guarantee she'd be pissed if I did that to her.

I hate it when I'm in the car, and the guy next to you just 'has to' drag you off from the lights - he/she just has too ! ! . . . . and then proceed to sit on 40km/hr !
Like seriously, why drag me off when you're not intending to travel at the speed that I woulda been ! GGrrrrrr :x :x

FTR, I agree with the comments made already; that being, the reason for road rage is more often than not, a result of people who can't drive for shit and/or have NFI bout what's goin on around them or both !

I hate that on the bike. You come up beside someone where there's a lane ending or something, and when the light goes green they go out of their way to race you off and make your merge as difficult as possible. It's like people can't give up precious inches (hahahaha  in traffic I mean!) or it will ruin their day.

The funny thing is, if you weren't there, they'd have taken off slowly and been back there ANYWAY!

So true 2 quick stories.. amongst thousands out there..

PI last year - i was in a group of 20 bikes who caught up to a P plater sitting on 80km who then decided to jump on the picks and completely STOP at the end of the single lane on ramp! .. i can still hear and smell the rubber.. . mind you I think they learnt … heaven help steel caps angel12.gif

At Vic roads - a kid who failed his cager learners was arguing with the woman behind the counter that he wanted a refund because he didn’t pass, then he wanted to do the test again, then he wanted an interpreter.. to which the woman said NO NO NO. The whole time his dad stood quiet next to him (worked out later he could not speak english)
After awhile I was in and out and the boy and the woman were still arguing.
In the car park getting on the bike I just about fell over. The kid jumped into the drivers seat of the fathers car – No learner plates and then proceeded to go out the Entry – new_shocked.gif ?
It all comes down to how you ride it.....

AARGH!!! That is the worst..........KEEP LEFT UNLESS OVERTAKING....it's not rocket surgery!

Also the people driving in heavy traffic who just HAVE to reverse park into that parking space and hold everyone up around them while they struggle to reverse park the smallest car in the world into an average size parking spot! In heavy traffic, if you can't drive straight into the space then MOVE ON!! I have a little trick that works EVERYTIME, when i'm driving the truck and they pull up to reverse into the spot i simply pull up right behind them, blocking the spot completely and forcing them to find a more suitable parking spot

muahaahahahah I love a good road-rage story.........and could spend *hours* with stories about 'incidents' down here over the years...

but its always the same story - drivers who think they have a god-given right to stay in the right lane (ie the overtaking or passing lane) at or below the posted limit......and then get the shits and flash their lights / blast the horn when you overtake on the left and pull in front of them ....WTF is that all about ??

On Sunday arvo, I was driving over to the other side of town to pick up my new toy (see seperate thread ;) ).......on the way there, I had to go through a new roundabout near the airport. So far so good......in the right hand lane approaching said roundabout is a Mercedes coupe of some description.....travelling about 50kmh in a 60 zone.........so far so good.

I am travelling a bit quicker, towing an empty trailer. I move into the left lane (its a 2-lane roundabout), and pass this asshat on the left as we exit the roundabout - still 2 lanes for another 100m......

Asshat just jumps on the horn for about 30 seconds as I go past ??? Flashes headlights, etc etc probably had a minor stroke as well for all I know - and for what ? I passed him ?? Fuck me some people just should not be allowed out of the comfort of their own armchairs.

Back in the days when I rode a Yamaha I entered a roundabout and had a moron in a van pull out in front of me on the next entry to the roundabout.

After ramming the breaks into the ground and stopping just in time before my front wheel left an imprint in the side of his van, I pulled up along side the drivers window and yelled "Hey!" and lifted my hand as if to say what are you doin.

He then proceeded to give me the bird and yell "Farken Farken Farken!!!".

So I saw red  Stuck my boot into the side of the drivers side door and pushed it in a bit. I then though, "I dont think that was the right thing to do", I then proceeded to ride up the road at a pace I new the van couldnt follow me at.

I havent done it again :)
