The summary is that basically they've tabled the idea of putting tougher penalties on learners similar to those already in place for P platers. Ranging from demerit points for having passengers in the car without seatbelts or those riding a bike capacity outside of their restrictions through to suspending the license of a L plater for loosing to many points via breaching the rules. They are also looking at introducing the right for the RTA to decline renewal of a L-platers license if they lost too many points if it is suspended.

its tough with cars they have put in the cant drive a V8 or turbo thing and that took years.

but L platers should be given 3 points and if they loose them then no renewal for 12 months

funny think about the no v8, turbo or supercharged cars...

mercedes make some of the safest cars on the road, most of them are supercharged and therefore cannot be driven by P platers.

it should be a power to weight ratio thing. and anything modded should be banned.

turbo diesels are also banned for p platers...

but you can still get an 'exception" for work purposes etc

I think you've gotta give L platers a bit of slack. They are Learning after all and they aren't going to be perfect. as a father who has taught two kids to drive thus far let me tell you it aint easy to get them to do the right thing all the time, they all make mistakes and hopefully learn from them. I also personally don't like the focus that P Platers get because of a few knobheads. Sure they all think they can drive but most of them work it out after a moment or two and hopefully they don't ace themselves or someone else in the process. Unfortunately shit happens, it always has and always will.

I put it to you that oldies and dopes who use their mobile phones pose a far greater menace on our roads than errant L Platers and P Platers. The stats don't bear it out because P Platers feature in a lot of the accident stats, but then most P platers will drive 200klm's to get a milkshake whereas most oldies probably drive 200klms in a month. Train them all first though before putting them out on the road.

it isnt fair.

but its teh same as us motorcyclists getting targeted as speeders and what not.

its a few who stuff it up for all
maybe bring in a rule that you can drive anything untill you get fined or loose x amount of points then you get teh restrictions enforced for x years

There needs to be more attention to driver training rather than constantly focusing on how to restrict and fine new drivers for screwing up. If kids aren't taught how to drive properly then of course they are going to have accidents and drive like idiots. If the government put the same amount of effort into making people BETTER drivers rather than how to make MONEY off the idiot drivers then the roads would be a much safer and less stressful place to be.
Drivers (NSW in particular) are rapidly getting worse and worse by the day! I drive for work all day everyday and it really amazes me the level of stupidity out there in drivers of ALL ages! EDUCATION is the answer not tougher penalties!

If kids aren't taught how to drive properly then of course they are going to have accidents and drive like idiots. If the government put the same amount of effort into making people BETTER drivers rather than how to make MONEY off the idiot drivers then the roads would be a much safer and less stressful place to be.

I agree to that mate... its not the first time ive nearly been hit by a P plater and a full licenced idiot...hardly any L platers, they too chickenshit to move lanes lol, i dont know what it is...but when i drive near the city its like theres a tornado behind everyone and they wanna get away, crazy drivers...here in my area...they all drive peacefully... and dont even mention when it rains... ANYWHERE theres an idiot waiting for u to crash into them!!

I was pretty sure that they are fine for P platers here... It was certainly the case when the laws first came out.

It's one thing to say that we need these different kinds of driver training (and we do), but who's gonna pay for it? Can you imagine how long you would have to wait to book in to these kinds of things? Who would front the money to build and run enough skid-pans (for instance) to allow everybody to practice driving in low traction environments, and not have to wait a year for the pleasure? I do think it should be mandatory for this kind of training but physically doing it is a pretty tough call.

I just think it is a bit ridiculous that the most inexperienced drivers are expected to be the most perfect, whilst getting a full licence is basically free reign to get let off. A P plater is automatically taken off the road for accidently doing 5 over whilst a full licenced person is slightly punished and sent on their way.
Additionally, a full licenced person who hasn't had a speeding fine in 5 years and can appeal to have a low range one let go on the basis of good behaviour. This explicitly says that even the best drivers out there will occasionally speed, and that can be forgiven. But a younger driver doesn't get the same benfit of the doubt.

The entire transport legal system is upside down and needs to be totally rewritten based on logical expectations and proper education. Enough with the lessons on speed, more on the lessons with control and OBSERVATION.

A logical thing to do would be to have subsidised trackdays. You can't stop a teenager from doing what they want to do. That is the definition of teenager. All you can do is let them realise (which is very different from telling them) when and where to do it. Ofcourse the public would simply say that if we let them speed on the track they will want to do it even more on the street. Everyones got an opinion. Some people shouldn't be allowed to.
