replacement instrument cluster

Hi All,

Due to a series of significant misunderstandings between mates *restraining self* I am resorting to streetfightering my 2005 zx12r. In an attempt to get it a bit closer to road-legal, I've used custom gaffer tape brackets (to match the custom gaffer tape bodywork) to mount the stock instrument panel, which is huge and rather unstable and scary at speed.

Query is where can I get an alternative instrument cluster, at the very least covering speed, low fuel and a trip meter? Was thinking of hitting up a wreckers for a more compact instrument cluster off another bike - are there compatibility issues I need to be aware of? or are there aftermarket products available? anything I need to know about these? (esp. regarding electrics as I resent having to negotiate with wires) Any recommendations for suppliers? Trying to do this in a creative way, and preferably for less than 300 bucks...

Appreciate any suggestions, bonus points for creativity and functionality. Thanks heaps!!

Hi Jamie,

Speed and a trip meter you can get from a (push)bike computer. I had one on my GPX250R, it was more accurate than the OEM speedo AND it had a clock (ok, so I'm easily excited). Some of them read up to 300Km/h as well, and have backlight (I'm pretty sure you would be able to wire the light permanently on). If you go this route don't buy a wireless model, there's too much RF interference from a motorbike for these to work. You'll also need to epoxy a small rare-earth magnet to one of your disk spiders, and run the sensor cable up to where you've mounted the head unit, but it's an easy enough job. Also, make sure it's waterproof (not all of them are) .

...not exactly a ZX-12R, but you'll get the idea.

If you want to go high-tech, something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/GARMIN-EDGE-205- ... dZViewItem means you don't have to run a cable.

As for low fuel, just a LED on the right wire would be best, but I'm guessing that's something you will need a circuit diagram for...although if you were going to wire in a non-Kwakka cluster you'd need the same thing.

Umm, you would have to ask what sort of cyclist would get to that speed, but I'm guessing this sort of thing is pretty popular.

The Cateye brand measures up to 300km/h, something like this would fit the bill: http://www.cateye.com/en/product_detail/254.

Some other other like the Astrale 8 http://www.cateye.com/en/product_detail/253 say they have a wired pickup from the rear wheel. These come with a longer sensor wire, you may not need that, but it's worth keeping in mind. They also have useless functions like cadence, which isn't going to help you much unless you are going to peddle the 12 .

It'll take a bit of fiddling to get it to work but should be ok. You may need a small rare-earth magnet, they can also be purchased on-line, let me know if you want the URLs. They only cost cents but they're needed as the Cateye magnet is designed to clip onto a spoke.

Late Edit> One of the guys here has a selection of rare-earth magnets I can mail you at no charge if you want to go down this route. The letter will be easy to spot, it'll be the one stuck to the roof of your letterbox .

I ordered one (can't remember brand now - sorry) that is waterproof, wired, goes to 200km/hr and has a range of wheel circumferences (not fixed settings) only drama is that I don't think it has a backlight. Figure it'll tide me over til I can go over the local wreckers. Thanks for all assistances, when it arrives I'll no doubt post up again asking for advice on how to mount the farker.

Hi Jamie. The Cateye Enduro 8 computer works for any wheel with a circumference between 100cm and 300cm and is able to be set at any value between these two points in 1cm increments, so I'm not sure who gave you that info . (Yes, I found and I downloaded the manual last night )

FWIW I mounted my computer to a slice of broomstick painted black with the flat side glued to the dash of the GPX and the curved side glued to the computer mount . That way the computer could still be removed when leaving the bike in public and changing the battery. Here's a pic with the mount between the speedo and tacho:

I think I know what has happened. Some one has seen ''two wheel sizes' on some of the descriptions and taken that as being only two size tyres being configurable. It actually means you can buy another mount and use one computer on a MTB and a road bike with different size wheels and quickly change wheel diameters between both of them.

Seraph - this is what you want for a 'fightered 12. It is a great looking unit, has all the functions you could possibly want/need in a dash, and I think would be perfect for your bike.
