Unsure about a 96 ZX 6R

Post by dreman »

Hi there,

I was contemplating buying a 1996 ZX 6. I was wondering if there are any issues with this model or are there any things to look out for. This is my first Kawa, so am stepping into unfamiliar territory. Any opinions welcomed.

What are you hoping the bike will be?

Cheap transport? Check
Reasonably comfortable? Check
Latest supersport weapon? Nuh

What are you coming from?

250? You'll love it.
Modern 600? It'll show it's weaknesses
A Honda? You'll love it any your sex life will improve :D

I'm not aware of any particular issues with the F series 6r .... it looks a bit long in the tooth and some parts are probably starting to get a bit rare, but plenty of people still ride them and quite a few are doing trackdays/racing on them too. I gather they can be made to stop and go, go around corners and weigh less than my 9, plus they're pretty cheap.

I'd be more looking at the individual bikes once they're that age - whether it's been regularly serviced, what condition the body work is in, the number of km's, etc. There might not be a lot of difference in price to a later model if you're patient.

Good luck and be sure to let us know how you get on.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the input. I was riding a CBR 400 where I come from. Now that I am here in Australia for work, I thought I'd buy something to go out riding with the friends. Wont be really taking it to the track. Think the balls not big enough. :D They are fairly cheap now. Can get one for under 5k, Dont really want to spend too much as I already have a car. I spose I will have to look around carefully for one that isnt too trashed.

A CBR400 you say .... so where are you from then? If you've got up to $5k to spend I'd be looking for a later model zx6r, maybe a 99 or even a J1 (2000) model. There's one for sale on here at the moment for $6K- viewtopic.php?f=16&t=20318.

You could also have a look at this zx9r (which is a pretty good buy IMO) - viewtopic.php?f=16&t=20804

Where are you located?

I had a F series ZX6 - you will enjoy it if you are stepping up from something smaller :)

Mine never had any mechanical problems whatsover - bits of the fairings had a habit of breaking though - and the frame cracked - I read somewhere that the F series was prone to the frames cracking?

If you can find one in good nick for a good price you won't regret it :D

Yeah, F1 (1995) frames were spagetti! But the f2's are fine. 8)

Actually I've been thinking about that and I think I am likely to stick with the 636!

Although of course come actual upgrade time all bets are off

I'm originally from singapore and a 400 there was sufficient but the roads here are really nice to ride on. I think a 600 would suffice. It will be a weekend sort of bike. Just to ride 100 or 200 kms trips. So the 1996 models are known as the F2s, is it? Although my budget is around the 5k mark, cheaper is better. I was considering stripping the engine and give it a good clean but that may be a bit too far fetched. I'm currently in perth. Not sure if there are any members in perth that may be selling their bikes.

cheers
