dt175 1998 Model tech tips

Post by Mick015 »

Hi All,

Today I bought the wife a 1998 DT175, so she can get her L's on it. Anyway, the OIL light is on and in speaking the guy in the shop he tells me it needs an oil sender. ( Which I might add the bike shop are going to supply me with)
So Anyway I ride a ZZR600, but find the DT smokey. I know two strokes are smokey anyway but this seems alittle excessive. I was thinking if the Oil sender is faulty, will this make the oil feeder supply too much oil and hence make it smokey? Any suggestions? I checked arounf a few other forums and nver found anything worth reading........never mind something educational! The DT has about 10500kms on it ( so says the speedo).

Any ideas? Anyone got a manual for these?

Cheers

You know what they say...."Where theres smoke there is fire" If you can see smoke but cant see a fire then it might be a case of BYO and build one underneath it!
Excess smoke from a 2 stroke hmmm
Still running oil injection? If so is it adjusted properly?
How is the oil level in the gearbox? is it leaking through to the crankcase?
DT's are pretty foolproof and simple but more info required for diagnosis.
Try running premix fuel with the oil tank drained.
what does the exhaust smoke smell like? 2 stroke or a Datsun 120Y?.
I got a sweater for my birthday. I realy wanted a moaner or a screamer.

I think the oil sender only tells you that the tank is almost empty, ie a warning light.
There is an adjustment but I dont reccomend you go playing with it.
Its behind the on the right hand of the motor (from memory) but it really needs to be adjusted at the shop.
Tell the mech when you take it in for the new sender,
OR it may be the oil you re running it, did the last owner know what he was doing ? Who knows whats in it, Victa oil ??
Go for a good synth when refilling.
Oh and I am on Two Wheels and lurk at Bikeme and I can tell you straight if you had have asked Pax at TwoWheels he would have told you EXACTLY how to do it.
Most sites dont just have information about DT175's riddling their forums.

Just because you can ride, doesnt mean you should. My reason on this earth is an example to others what NOT to do.

Definately a 2 stroke oil smell. There is a little oil from the exhaust also. I am thinking I'll drain it completely and start over so I know exactly whats in there and then see how it goes. I think I'll use some mixed fuel and disconnect the oil tank to start with and see if this improves it.

thanks for tyour thoughts.

Cheers

iamwithstupid.gif Sorta!?

Oil sender is definitely for low oil warning re the VRO oil resevoir.
DO NOT FARK WITH THE ADJUSTMENT unless you know what you are doing!!
2 - strokes always smoke cold .. You may well also find it's been babied for too long and needs a bloody good hiding!!
I would recommend you use a decent 2 stroke oil in the tank like Caltex semi sythetic (no need for a full syn in a bloody ag bike!!)
You may well find some clown has filled the oil tank with 4 stroke engine oil which smokes like a bastard!! [ref S&W's post]

Pull the plug and check the number. Heat range may well be too cold.

How many tanks of fuel have you used??

If none I'd prob drain the fuel tank and re-fill with ULP only (may have pre mix plus VRO oiler???
