Does anyone know what brands are actually good these days?
I need to buy a good quality watch for my wifey and I wanted to get one that lasts, doesn't break down, is well made etc.
I want the Kawasaki of the watch world not the Harley.
There seems to be alot of rhetoric and advertising about particular watch brands but I want to get past the hype and glamour etc etc and buy the real deal.
Anyone help?

I guess a lot of it comes down to how much you want to spend, and how much value you put on "fashion". Some of the big name watches are a total waste of money in my opinion, but on the other hand the Tag Hueur watches are fantastic fashion items and quality made units.
A lot of the guys I work with have a soft spot for just about anything made by Casio and I can't really disagree with them. All the Casio's I've ever had have been fantastic. I have one here that I was given as a kid, when I was just about old enough to tell the time. Still ticks away.
You may not have noticed, but I am a mad watch perv. It's my other vice apart from bikes. I have a collection of about 30 or more, some cheap ones some the business. If you are after quality and don;t care about price then A Tag Heuer is A worthwhile investment. If you are looking at watches in the 10K range, take your wife to Thailand and buy it there, what you save will pay for the holiday plus some! Raymond Weil are also another brand I have had good service from. These are just as Exxie as the Tags but. Phillipe Patek also make nice ladies stuff, but it's exxie too.
If looking more in the midrange of watches, then Longines are lovely ladies watches. I bought one for my ex 8 or so years ago for a fair wad of coin and it's still going on the original battery without any wear of the finish.
Tissot and Seiko are also pretty good midrange watches from my experiences with them.Tissot are a little more usually, but they are nicely finished.
The clothing brand watches are usually abosolute crap! ie- diesel, Mossimo, pierre cardin, etc etc.,

There are really only two questions in life. 1.Which way do i go? 2.What is the lap record?
Seiko and Pulsar come out of the same factory. Citizen also shares a cheaper brand too but the name escapes me. Adina? Rolexes are the go if money is no object. I have two Rolex Submariners. One was a gift from my bro and one I bought off ebay with a chinese heritage. It didn't last long..... My bro has a real Rolex but the thing cost nine grand. Nice, indestructable watch though.
2 X ZRX1200R 4 X ER6N, GT550, 1988 ZX-10, 4 X GPZ250R, 4 X GPZ900R and GPZ750R Yeah I like Kawasakis.
Got a Tag, beautiful watch in every way - until the battery died within the 1st year!
Had a Casio G-Shock for the last 20 years, it is not the prettiest watch and the g-shock but doesn't help when a stupid teen throws it against a wall. But it has had 1, yes one battery change. The battery was changed when a damaged button was fixed way before I ever met my wife, and we started dating in 92! Honestly, it's that long ago I can't remember quite when it was changed. This watch has never failed, has great features and never fails to amaze me when I check the time on it. That's value for money.
I also have a Lorus Sports which was been great value for money and a nice looking watch, if a little basic.
For reliability -- Casio!... I got one from dad in 1984 and still works, well the battery dies anyway since I now simply look at my mobile
For taste, definitely a Patek, you know the one you dont actually own but "merely keeping for your next generation" ... if not stolen that is

POLICE have released images of four people in relation to the theft of thousands of dollars from a business in the Brisbane Arcade on Thursday afternoon.
About 1.30pm, an employee of the Brisbane Vintage Watches went to a nearby bank to withdraw cash. As he returned, he was followed by a woman who stood outside the business with a man. They looked at the display window before entering.
A short time later two other accomplices arrived, another man and a woman. One couple distracted staff while the other couple went behind the counter and stole a large sum of cash. The couples then left the store shortly after.
The men are described as having tanned complexions, and the women fair. They have accents and are possibly South American.
Inspector Wes Biddle, Brisbane Central District, said the theft was well-planned with the offenders presenting themselves as legitimate customers.
"These people are organised and work together to pick a potential target. In this incident they have taken advantage of the willingness of staff to assist customers.
"It's important that all business owners and employees remain aware of their surroundings and the people in the store, and have measures in place to ensure registers and valuables are secured," Inspector Biddle said.
"We are not aware of any other offences, but if anyone has any further information on other incidents or the identity of these people, they are asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."
