Sign the petition against front number plates

Post by Rossi »

Dunno if it's a repost but

I have just visited GoPetition and found the following page very interesting:

PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No where in the world except Singapore are front number plates required for motor cycles as motorcycles were never designed to carry them; as it is we pay an extra $50 per year (A supposed safety levy to enhance motorcycle safety, what a laugh) over that of car drivers and yet we produce less pollution, reduce traffic congestion, take up less room on the roads, less room when parking, do less damage to the roads thus reducing road repairs and are far better for the environment.

Many years ago they removed front number plates from bikes as it was causing too many injuries to the riders, pillions and pedestrians in the event of an accident. Modern motorcycles are not designed to carry front number plates due to limited space from one or more of the following reasons:- front suspension, engine cooling, headlight, engine air intakes, screens or visors and aerodynamics not to mention safety to all concerned.

The only reason that the State and Federal Government wants to fit them is because they miss out on a little bit of revenue from front facing speed cameras. Sure speed can kill but speed in itself doesn’t kill, in appropriate speeding kills and that is rarely if ever under the nose of a speed camera fitted to a freeway in the major capital cities.

The authorities say that a large percentage of accidents are caused by speed, not true.

In most accidents of this type the vehicles were doing below the posted speed limit but were going faster than safe for the circumstances; so speed cameras would have been of no use anyway, don’t always believe what big brother is telling you they just want the money from speed cameras.

The only thing that speed cameras has done is to rake in millions of dollars for the Government and made the number of rear end collisions sky rocket as drivers/riders are concentrating on their speed, not where they are going or what is happening around them.

Most countries in the world actively support motorcycles as a legitimate form of transport as it greatly reduces the cost of infrastructure for large modern cities, the Australian State and Federal Governments do everything they can to discourage motorcycling in this country, why I do not know.

We have the most draconian road rules in the world here in Victoria, and yet the road toll is no higher or lower than that of other parts of the country.

What we need are roads with fewer road signs to confuse drivers, fewer trees and light poles near the road, better, wider roads with better road surfaces, advanced driver training for all road users and the re-introduction of a 10% tolerance to the speed limit (Victoria only has a 3 km/h tolerance) as it is everywhere else in the World/Australia.

There are more than 550,000 registered motorcycles in this country so we do have a voice, click on the link below and fill out the petition form and support motorcyclists in this fight to stop the politicians from bringing in this ridiculous law.

I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.
