00 ZX12 FI light goes on briefly

Post by Christo »

Just noticed on my last couple of rides that the FI light comes on while stationary at the lights.
Goes off when moving again. Probably worth getting checked out while under warranty as I have only had
the bike three weeks. Any idea what it might be, its only done 19,600 kms? I did have the bike checked over
by a Kawasaki mechanic before I handed over my money.

I have almost exactly the same problem on the MFP12 - its an 05 model.

Only difference is that my FI light comes on whenever I give the old girl a thrashing.......the light stays on until the bike is turned off, and when re-started, the FI light is off again......

Its a bit weird - and doesn't happen if I am just tooling around at normal speeds ( commuting etc ).

Fucked if I know what causes it, but will get the mechanics to check it out at the 36k service (already overdue  ), and post up any reasons if they know what the problem is.

Just a guess, check the plug into the ECU -black box- under the seat for good contact, battery leads and earth. If the FI light blinks it is an error code, check on zx12-r.org? for a work around or take it to a mechanic or get that PC3 you allways wanted.

I have done a pretty extensive search on the zx12 website, and found the fault codes etc. The bike must also have a dirty/faulty neutral sensor as the neutral light does not light up sometimes and hence the starter will not crank with the centrestand down and the clutch 'out' even though it is in neutral, which is a right pain when warming the bike up. Maybe the faults are related. Regardless it will going back to the dealer while under warranty.

Johnno - the light doesn't blink, it just goes on and stays on ? It seems to be random, but nearly always occurs either during or after a thrash..... :?

But I also have a similiar problem like Christo with the starting - it starts fine in neutral with the stand up, but *won't* start in gear, with the clutch pulled in and the stand up ?? It used to.............maybe its just a build-up of crud around the sidestand lock-out switch...... :?

Just had the neutral sensor replaced (under warranty) and now all is well.
