Quick question about online race bike adverts

I've been looking online at a lot race bikes for sale on various sites (because i like to dream), and sometime i come accross the line " unregistable or cannot be registered "

What exactly does this mean ?

no road gear ? or is there more to it ?

There are three main reasons:
1. It was a statuatory write off (from a road accident) and therefore wont be registered by the RTA.
2. It was stolen and used as a track bike, VIN may have been removed.
3. It has been modified in such a way that it could not be registered eg. cut light stems, ignition rewired and removed, modified fuel jets

Anyone correct me if i'm wrong.....i'm just posting what iv'e read here

always ask them if they have purchase receipts, from the auction or dealer or whomever they bought it from.

...people who try to flog off their trackbikes tend to get lots of calls from bright sparks whose first question when they ring up is, "Any rego, moite?"

Now, trackday enthusiasts generally being men and women of few words and, in a lot of cases, even fewer thoughts, they tend to try to counter this with ambiguous statements like "unregistrable" and "cannot be registered" in their ads, rather than the more precise "statutory write-off", "no compliance plate", "no road gear, but compliance plate still on frame", "valid compliance plate, but dent in frame; needs repair for rego" which would precisely describe the situation and remove the need for phonecalls which go, "So, when you say 'unregistrable', what exactly do you mean?"

Getting back to that 'few words' thing from earlier, the usual response to this is, "Unregistrable," meaning that, rather than try to find out the bike's compliance status over the phone, just arrange for a time to go around and look at the thing if you're interested. It'll be less frustrating. Trackday enthusiasts also tend to be competitive and competitive people are easily slighted; asking multiple questions on the same subject could be interpreted as you implying they're some kind of dumbcunt...

"Unregistrable" in an ad for a bike in track trim can really mean anything from, "I converted my bike to a trackbike when the Mrs said it was too dangerous for me to ride on the road, then I sold the road gear when she said we needed more room in the garage, and now I'm selling the bike because she said she wants me to work on the garden on the weekend," to "We bought this for $500 from an auction, pulled off the bits with the fire damage on them and slapped raceglass on."

The bike could have valid compliance, but no road gear. Or it could be a stat writeoff, or it could've been built from a secondhand frame imported from Japan. In the latter two cases, it's genuinely unable to be registered.
