ZX10 SERVICE

Post by Glen »

After Seraph's post recently on what a 12k service for a 12 is I thought I'd check to see what actually gets done at a 12k service for a 10.

Well surprise,surprise the answer is......not a lot

Apart from a lot of "inspecting" the guts is just an oil and filter change and a little surprisingly new plugs. Now apparently plugs are a real pain in the arse on a 10. Mick at CHM tells me it's a drop the radiator job. Anyone here done the plugs on a 10 as I haven't had the pleasure yet?

The service manual for a 10 is also a little incorrect. It says you don't change the oil and filter at 18,000  (must be a typo)
It's really all about standing around drinking Dave's beer.

I got up to the 24,000km services done by the shop because it was still under warranty, so I didn't have to do the plugs, shims etc. Now it's out of warranty I'll do most of it myself with the workshop manual. Not 100% sure about the plugs, but I do remember reading that they are a pain in the arse to get at.

The hardest part is getting the air box out.
I did it to remove the KLEEN and it has to be done in a particular manner as its so tight....

I think he will but only on the condition that we stay there to drink the beer while we watch him... :D

Ah yes, I've had it out a couple of times...there's a real trick to the twist, rotate, stand on your head while balancing a beer on your old fella to get the airbox out and back in again :?

The plugs don't need to be changed until the 24,000 km service as they are iridium plugs standard. When it does come time to change you don't have to take the radiator but they are still a pain to get out. You have to remove two bolts from the engine mount and loosen the third so that you can swing the mount out of the way to reach the outer spark plugs, do one side at a time though. Have a look at this pic, don't laugh at my crappy paint skills :P

I forgot to mention the air box is somewhat difficult to remove if you have not done it before. Try and push the intake tubing back into the frame, you don't want to pull this out as its a real pain to get back in. Then have to twist the air box diagonally up and out with a bit of force.

I hope that helps somewhat. :)

Thanks lads. I think you're right about the 24,000 Paz, although the original workshop manual says 12,000 I thinks it's a typo, just like th no oil change at 18 :?
