GPX 250 winter idling
Hi guys, i was out on my 98 GPX 250, and id been riding for a good 30 mins constantly, so id turned the choke off halfway through that, but literally as soon as i pulled of the thing stalled and i had to pull the throttle on a fair way to get it to kick over again. In the end i left anough choke on to keep the revs at about 700-1000 rpm. Has anyone else had this issue? Is it just hte fact it was cold or could there be some other issue?

ur using the choke to keep idle at 700rpm?? most bikes like to idle at 1000rpm or there about, so is ur mix/idle ok??
bike sounds like its idling low maybe...start with simple shit first tho- check air filter is clean, make sure no fuel lines are blocked (is it running an inline fuel filter??)
failing that..wait for the others to comment...

In the service manual, it says the idle should be 1300 rpm +/- 100 so it should be around 1200-1400. The idle adjust knob is on the left side of the bike around the top area i.e. http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/What_is_th ... just_it%3F
Basically, I wait until the end of a ride after warming up the bike and adjust the knob until it is half way between 1000 and 1500.
Why do you have the choke on while riding? What I do is I start the bike with the choke half way and gradually increase it if needed (I try not to use more choke than I need and I probably use the choke for no longer than 3-5 seconds. ) until I can use the throttle to keep the rpm between 3000-5000. I do this for 1 min and then ride off and keep the rpm around 5000 i.e. sometimes I ride in 5th gear to maintain a speed of ~60km/h. I do this until the temperature needle goes above the cold indicator.
Remember, the GPX is supposed to run cool so the needle should always stay on the cold side of the temperature gauge. Just slightly above the "c" and the GPX 250 engine is plenty warm

Thanks for that guys. Ive only really been out on it twice, since im still on my L's (should have that fixed soon tho), so im not exactly full-bottle on the ins and outs of the thing. Tho, i think it might be the idle-adjustment knob, since the engine was at the point described as being the running temp.

didnt have to adjust the idling for winter.... since the twin cylinder makes it fairly torqy at low revs I would think there is another problem...
a few things to check...
1. Oil (low on oil means more friction, which means lower revs) check your oil.
2. Run an engine cleaner through it... You can buy them at most repco, supercheap etc places (even the supermarket)... In case your needles are dirty
3. Spark plugs. pull them out, check to make sure they are clean... This is very easy to do.... Hell, it might even be time to replace them.... they cost bugger all, so feel free...

Cheers. Im using Premium Unleaded, however my Dad thought it was a bit iffy to use cause he'd used it in his Harley and it had "run like a dog". Im almost out of this tank, so ill switch back to normal and see how that goes. Going for a ride on Sunday so ill see how it goes then, and ill try the idling suggestion. Assuming i remember.

...and yes, the premium fuel isn't going to do much for the GPX other than cost you money and not burn as well. Just stick with regular unleaded and you should be fine.
