for those who think so

GPS leads woman off beaten track
Nick Sheridan May 8, 2007 - 11:17AM

A Melbourne woman who relied on her car's computerised navigation system to direct her to Port Campbell had to be towed by a local farmer after getting bogged on a bush track 30 kilometres from her destination.

A farmer rescued the woman with his tractor about 30 minutes drive outside of the south-west Victorian town of Carpendeit, according to Victoria Police. "She was following her GPS but it took her down a road which turned into a muddy four wheel drive track," Senior Constable Scott Thompson from Port Campbell said.

The woman called 000 just before 8pm last night, but was unable to tell police her exact whereabouts, so officers at the Warrnambool communications centre coordinated a number of cars to search the general area. A farmer who had seen the woman's car near his property heard of the search over his police scanner and alerted police to the woman's whereabouts.

Ummmm I don't think we can blame the GPS entirely. Surely any adult that has the intelligence to hold a drivers license is intelligent enough to know she's not on the right path when she hits a muddy track in her car.

Maybe we should set her next waypoint for launceston

Where is there anything in that story that says or implies that the GPS was innaccurate? From what I can tell it was very accurate, and most likely had her exact location within a couple of meters.

The only issue I can see is that the software that was handling the mapping and guidance didn't have the right info in it for that bit of road.

So GPS accurate, mapping software dodgy, operator far too trusting.

reminds me of the tale of someone blindly following their gps but falling off a cliff. had a quick look, but found nothing true or false about it.

One would think....Melbourne to Port Campbell, main destination...hmmm sealed roads! Surely after turning onto a dirt road you would at least stop and closely look at the map on the GPS! She gives women drivers a bad name. I bet she was blonde. :P

She probably had forgotten to exclude unsealed roads when she punched in shortest possible route from melbourne to Port Campbell!!!!!

1. go to http://maps.google.com.au/

2. Click on Get Directions .

3. Put "Atlanta " to "Paris,France " in the map search
