I recently added 1gb RAM to my laptop and it worked fine for a few days, but suddenly it is deciding to crash at random moments. so could this be the reason or might it be something else?
Sorry I know that's not much info to go on but I have to post quickly in case it crashes again
the ram could be running at a different speed to the old ram, but the ram should normally run at the speed of the slowest ram (lowest common denominator).
Try using only one of the ram SO-DIMMS at a time. That will either sort it (and show one of them as faulty) or just show them as incompatible.
There are two slots - both were 256Mb so I replaced one with 1Gb and the other is still 256.
So how do I try one at a time - just take the 256 one out completely?

haha yep!!! and yeah try the new one by itself, then the old ram and see where/if it goes wrong. And yeah its possible for the new ram to go bung after a few days. When new stuff fails 90% of the failure is within the first few days. otherwise it'll last for aaages. But as i said usually it doesnt go bung.
Its probably the ram........ check the event log of your computer for the reason of the crash, if you are lucky you should get a helpful hint from there
google search for memtest86, burn it to cd or make a boot floppy (if your lappy has a floppy drive) and run the test from there. fire it up and leave it to do a comprehensive test with just the new module in there you'll find out soon enough (4hours if you do a FULL test) if it's a problem or not.
