Looking to buy a ZX-6r (Pre 2003)

Post by Technik »

I am in the process of getting a '02 ZX-636, is there anything that I need to look out for?

When does it usually due for major service? Most of them have done on average around 20,000km mark.

Any help is appreciated. :D

Cheers

Just make sure it isn't a green one that was bought from a salvage auction in QLD...

Great bike other than that! 8)

I have a mate with a 2002 636 and the major service is every 12.000ks I am farly sure its the same as the 600s.

I remember that the gear lever was very sloppy and i think a few other bits would and peices would have needed a little adjusting aswell.

His has 40 th on the clock although.

Im looking at about 350 400 bucks for a major service.
hop this helps.

Yes. 2000-2001 bikes in decent nick. Considerably cheaper, enough so to offset the 37cc smaller motor.

Kwak quote 12,000km for valve clearance checks. If my 2001-model ZX6 with 75,000km on it is indicative of the type, they need one shim swap at around the first 12,000km mark to iron out the engine bedding in and assembly-line sloppiness, then they're good for most of the rest of eternity; I checked my clearances a couple of thousand km ago, and they were still within spec.

One issue the higher-km bikes do develop is rich running due to emulsion tube/ needle jet wear, but that something all carbed bikes get to some extent.

My bike was a demo when I bought it. Had done around 900km when I picked it up in August 02. Now it has just under 59000km on it & has never missed a beat. Minor service every 6000km & major every 12000. Will probably change to every 5000 & 10000 as of next service. The extra tlc won't hurt.

Good stuff mate, they are a nice bike. Take it easy for the first few rides, until you get a good handle on *how it goes*.......it will be an eye-opener after your 250 !!!

thanks guy! will post up pics soon...

I've test rode a couple of Zx-6rs last week before making my purchase, they are bloody awesome to ride!

I found that the '07 model is a lot tighter than the '02 and is less comfortable cruising on the road.

The acceleration of the sixes are so quick compared with my little GPX. One time I was only on 2nd gear, didn't realise I was doing 110km/h - almost crap my pants! :)
