Honda VFR400R learner legal?

Hey guys

Since the 250cc limit here in tassie will be gone by june and the LAMS system will come in, i thought id check out all the new bikes i can upgrade to [:D]

From what i've been able to find out on the net, the RVF400 is on the list and fully legal but the vfr400r isnt, because apparently it has 6 or 7 more hp which makes it too powerful for its weight. But when looking at the specs for the two bikes, they both weight the same and VFR400R has 1 less hp so i can't see how it is exclude from the lams list:

Any solid answers? how difficult is insurance to obtain on grey-imports these days? if it goes under my dads name, hes got 20 something years without claims or accidents so that'll help lower it a bit.

oh and sorry for all this talk about hondas........... once im off my resrictions its straight onto a ZX-6R

the best advice i can suggest is get a dyno printout of the specific bike you want. Do the maths on the power to weight and remember the weight ballast of the rider, in NSW the RTA uses 90kilos as the standard weight, i heard some other states use 68 kilo's for rider weights above 250cc.

If it comes under the magic number of 160hp/tonne and you have doccumented proof of this, then you are able to submit it to the rta on the grounds it comes under the restrictions they have put in place.

Tassie is using 90kg rider weight and 150 kw/tonne.

Yep as Daisy points out we have a 150 kw/ ton with a 90kg rider which is about 187.5 hp/ton. Although a dyno map would be perfect for this situation there a two problems with getting one. Firstly from memory theres only one bike dyno down here in hobart and i can't remember where it is. Secondly how do i get the bike on a dyno without buying the bike?

If its anything like NSW rules though, unless its on the list you won't get away with it.
When it started in NSW they never listed the Yamaha TZR250 in the banned list with the other 2-Stroke 250's. Still couldn't get away with it, despite the fact it wasn't "officially" prohibited

Punisher, with the RTA if you can prove your bike comes under the restriction performance wise(as well as the assumed 660cc limit) then my impresison is that they will pretty much allow it.

The only ones absolutely a nono are the 2 smokers on the specifically denied list. I was on the phone to the RTA inquiries desk for a total of a hour finding all this stuff out for a thread i put on ocau.mc.

still it may be diff in Tassie.

Fair enough, I just remembered them leaving the TZR off the banned 2-Strokes list. Yet you still couldn't get away with riding them

I sussed this out a while ago and as far as I could find none of the sporty grey import 400's were allowed on the NSW LAMS list.

I was still instructing when LAMS first appeared and we were told quite specifically that if it wasn't on the list then it wasn't allowed. You could apply to have your bike included on the list and you stood a chance but that model then had to be added to the list. If a P's student rocked up with a model that wasn't on the list then no test

It may have changed since and it's likely different in Tassy (a common system would make way too much sense)

I had a look at one of these Hoondas this morning. It's little! If I were after more ponies it would be an option, but I really only want more size and weight.
