Going to uni

Well I've managed to get myself into the external computer science course at Armadale. I'm excited that I'm in but not? I'm looking at six years of working and studying potting out $1500 per year as I go. I've just got to keep telling myself that my boss who earns twice as much as me did the same course, and when I get my high paid job I'm buying a new zx10.

Good luck with it. Working and studying sucks. Really.

Last few jobs I've had, I've been more qualified than my bosses...but at least now the tables have turned in my favour...

I've just finished mine, yes working and studying really sux. I hardly had time for myself, let alone riding.

As kellz said, set a target and go for it, don't look back untill you are done.

I'm still waiting for the tables to turn in my favour, then I can upgrade

mate i did my 5 years of full time Bach Elec Eng & DBA.

I use to work part time as well, when u get out u will think it was well worth it.

but i think these days with computer science or IT u don't need degree anymore???? ppl only look at how many vendor certs u get??

or may be i'm wrong, but when i did my degree it sucked, i wish i would have never spent 16 G a year for that degree

I hail form the old school of television where there were tape machines that needed maintenance and cameras that would drift out of spec, and you pulled them apart and found the faulty component. Now everything is edited on computers and played out of huge servers with Linix proprietary software. Fixing faults consists of sifting through heaps of code to find where the system provider screwed up the latest software upgrade. After this I'll need to do post grad in management so I can end up being the Network Director of Engineering. If I was mainstream IT I'd agree with you on being MS cert but thats not what I deal with.

imo IT isn't really computer science anymore. The uni courses focus on creating software developers (which is good when that's what ya love) but not where most of the IT jobs are.
I've got a few of the basic cisco certs (ccna1 & 2 and a java one) but they don't actually really teach you much. They're super easy to get and don't teach you more than exactly what you need to know.
Uni is about a lot more than being job ready.. it teaches you to teach yourself and gives you the background knowledge you need.

I am in the sixth and final part-time year of my degree, and I am so glad that I am on the home run! It has been a really hard slog, and trying to keep motivated, while concurrently juggling full-time work to pay the mortgage, keep in touch with friends, and keep up hobbies and interests has been a struggle.

Good luck with the course, and stick at it. The first few years really drag, it gets to exam time and you think to yourself, "why the hell am I doing this!" The last couple of years go much faster though!

The hardest part is trying to write assignments and study for exams when the young tackers want to play on the weekend...

I like Armidale..I did a Certificate in Small Business
Management there (finishing with 2 weeks live in on campus)

despite having trouble keeping up with the locals
...drinking, i got the certificate

I use to work part time as well selling my arse around StKilda , thats how I met Mick Dundee . When u get out u will think it was well worth it , altho my arse is still so sore I can only ride my 7 when its not raining to avoid agravating the nasty rash that I got .
