Outlook Express Problem...
ok heres one for the nerdlingers out there....
my pc froze up last nite, and i couldnt get it to shut down (it was in the middle of opening OE) and the program wouldnt respond, nor would it shut down...
so i shut it down manually (finger on the button style-like with bretts mum)
now today i open OE and no files..all the saved emails and folders of emails are gone..can i get em back?? how ?? can i do a recovery??
thanks in advance for anything that may be remotely useful...

i get as far as "microsoft" folder, but can find an outlook folder of any sort, anywhere...Duane wrote:C:\document and settings\username\application data\microsoft\outlook express/outlook (dep what you use)\outlook.pst
Is your files.
If you do a system restore before the day it crashed, and copy those files from that directory, you should be right

Things to do in this order;
1. Run a scandisk.
(go to "My computer" right click on C: drive, click on "properties" "tools" "error checking" ... Now tick BOTH the buttons and click on OK... At this point the computer may tell you that it cannot do the scandisk until you have restarted your computer. If that happens, restart your computer... let it run the scandisk... This may take a while).
After restarting the computer open outlook and see if your messages are back.
2.
If not, you will need to locate your PST (pronounced "pissed") file. This is generally located in something like
"C:\Documents and Settings\neka\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{2BEDEBAB-0AD9-4280-96E0-3A9028005D65}\Microsoft\Outlook Express"
So may be hard to find..... but dont worry....
Go into outlook express, click on tools, options, maintenance, store folder
(it will pop up a dialogue box)
Highlight all of the text in there and copy it (CTRL+C or right click copy)...
Click on START and click on RUN
Remove anythign in there and paste (CTRL+V or Right click paste)
Press enter or click on OK.
This will open the folder that your pissed file is in........ right click on the PST file and tell use the size please...
if you dont see the pissed file, call me during work hours... PM me to get the number....
*NOTE: Some versions of outlook do not use a PST file, it may be using *.DBX files... in which case we would want to know the inbox.DBX file name...
Feel free to PM me...
By the way, there is an 80% chance that your screwed.....

*.pst files belong to Outlook.
*.dbx files belong to OE.
I've been through everything with Neka and we are still unable to recover his email.
He is running Mcafee Virus Scanner and I seem to remember something about this shitty virus scanner killing Outlook Express emails a while back. I think I'll have to look that up later when I get some time.
