Springs n clickers n ride heights n stuff like that!

Post by Strika »

I did some more fiddling before the ride on Sunday. I adjusted some suspension settings on the 9 too.

When I bought the bike, I adjusted the ride heights utilising all my skills and the high tech equipment in my tool box. (that means i grabbed a spanner and cranked the arse up till it looked about right  )

A road ride didn't really pick up too many issues, but the creek made it want to fall over. So I finally pulled the gauge out of the box and measured the head angle properly and set it at a figure a little less suicidal! It worked good then. However, before I had worked out that the ride heights were a little errrr extreme, I adjusted the damping to get it to handle better. But now the bike was back at a reasonable rake, the suspension didn't really work properly, and it made it a pig to ride. It wallowed everywhere, and ran horribly wide on the gas. So Sat before the ride, I had a bounce and reset the clickers.
I dialled in a little more compression, and a lot more rebound, and fark me if it wasn't a different bike again. All the wallowing has disapeared completely, replaced by a plush but solid feel throughout the suspension stroke. Small corugations or lateral ruts in a row confuse it a little, but other than that it seems to track nicely and still manage to soak up bumps and road irregularities without fuss. At full lean, I can now start feeding in the power without the bike wanting to squat and run wide. I now Wish I had it like this at the creek. Then I would have been smooth and slow! Not just slow!

IMHO it is more important the ends are matched than anything else.
Dont get me wrong, static sag etc. V important but at least if it matches you can ride around the wallows or piledriver. If you, or someone, stuffed it and it dont match it is a proper bitch. Sort of like building to a fast lap rather than cartwheeling into turn 1 (or 4  ).
Just because you CAN ride, doesn't mean you SHOULD
