ZX6 - Weird idle

Post by axza »

Hey All,

Just got my 6 a couple of months ago, just today it's developed a kind of.. lumpy idle. It's done 2800 k's and I regularly take it into the hills, it had its first track day last week and the WIMA pink ribbon ride this morning which is when it seems to have developed this 'problem'.

Normally when the engine is hot (60 - 100c) and you start it, it will idle straight to 1100 - 1200 and it sounds quite even, flat if that makes sense. Now what it's doing is with a hot engine the automatic choke is kicking in it's peaking to 2k rpm then dropping back down to where it should be, but it's fluctuating a little also, and it has this weird lumpy idle, instead of the flat note that it used to make.

I guess what I'm asking is whether this is something that I should worry about, or whether anyone has an idea what may be causing this. I'm thinking I might drop by the local K dealer and ask them tomorrow morning/afternoon to see if it's normal, or maybe I'm just dreaming.

Any help appreciated.

my 06 6R has only 600k on the clock, but when its dead cold it peaks and idles around 2k then drops to 1200rpm but i know the flat sound u r talking about, but every now and then it starts lumping a bit, then will return to the flat sound. Depends how closely u listen to it

Yeah, mine still does that when it's stone cold, but it acts differently when it's nice 'n warm - or used to. I think I'm probably dreaming but I thought I'd pose the question anyway.

Year and model mate?....any mods?.....My 05 636 "hunts" (up and down in revs) a bit at idle, but I put that down to the Micron pipe and no exhaust valve.

Do they still do a throttlebody sync as part of a 6000km service might be a bit of that which will cause a lumpy idle.
If I rode my bike at the speed of light, what would happen when I switched on its headlights?

Ahh sorry, it's an 06 ZX636.

Yeah, it does sound like it's hunting a bit if I have the right use of the word.

I might do that check with the kwaka boys and see what they think.

I am going to say it IS the lumpy idle
Those things SCREAM and they have lumpy cams
ZZR250s are worse.
Just because you CAN ride, doesn't mean you SHOULD
