Your very first riding gear!

Post by Strika »

The other threads have brought back some funny memories of what I used to wear, when I first started riding road bikes. Now folks just remember, we are talking circa 1982!

My first proper road bike was a Honda Z400 Supersport in red! mmmm One not too miss. I thought it was christmas back then but!

Here was my first riding outfit.

RM Williams chisel toes, or when I was poor, Baxters!

Pants- Best quality Levi's ofthe day!

Jacket- Once again, best quality Levi's or when poor Amaco jeans Jacket. With patches dutifully sewn on by the girlfriend of the day!

Gloves- Yeah right!

Helmet- Yep, even had a full face one. Some of you may remember Bell Helmets. Well I had a navy blue one! Press stud visor and all!!!!!

Oh....and my matching bike luggage, was one of those old canvas shoulder bags!

I remember riding from Young to Sydney in the pissing rain with my girlfriend on the back, mid winter, in just that gear alone! And yes, I was freezing!!!

Cause we had to have the minimum to do the learners test...

HJC helmet
R-Jays textile jacket
Alpinstars GPS waterproof boots (not bad but my new ones are better)
Levi's (hence the big scar on my knee)
can't remember the brand of gloves but they were shite...although I didn't get scars on my hands, so they weren't too bad.

heh, most of my road riding kit came from the dirt bke,

belstaff jacket,
sidi mx boots
and of course, levis :D
and a white bell helmet, no press studs though.

I eventually graduated to a walden miller leather jacket, which I still have, no hope of squeezing into it though.

denim jacket or in summer a nice tshirt  (i didnt have much of a clue back then)
dri rider gloves
combat boots (from the army surplus store)
jeans

the helmet was a pearler. one of those $100 laser's.
if you looked up at speed the wind would nearly tear your head off.

that was back about 7/8 years ago (when i had less fear).
if i was ever to slide up the road i would of been rooted. luckily the only offs i had back then were low speed stuff.

very happy to own decent gear now that fits properly and would actually protect me in a fall.

I had a FM helmet white with Australia flag on each side. It was made of cheap plastic just like those $99 AGV's. I wore old MX gloves, Nike Air Jordans that were worn out from half a dozen basketball seasons, jeans and an old Addidas jacket.
I am real glad I did not come off back then.

From deep dark memories, my first road hat was a Nolan.

Once I had a licence and a propper bike...

Sidi Touring boots
Rhino leather jacket & pants
AGV lid
Warm gloves for UK riding, don't recall make.

Sidi boots were awesome.
Rhino gear was so good I still have it and use it as winter gear (10 years and still going strong).
AGV was OK, but noisy
