ZX7-R shift light?

Post by spekt-r »

I was looking at some random pics on the net last night of some ZX7's and noticed one had a shift light, the same as those autometer ones, mounted near the guage cluster. Has anyone ever had any success mounting one of these on their bike? This is something that I would like to explore so if anyone has any info please let me know.

Don't mean to be a stick-in-the-mud or anything but I've never understood the need for those. Can't you hear when to change gear?
I can see Davezx9r (Dave#2) might be able to use one - but even he can FEEL when to change gear.
Please explain?

Oh, and no I haven't mounted one :D

Id like to have one. My 5th and 6th gear are so close I can't really hear the difference and Im always pulling in the clutch trying to change up in 6th gear and it annoys me.

I have seen plenty mounted, you can get them from MotoFx. They arent cheap buggers though. I suppose, like a rev indicator (Oh pretty lights) they are just another thing to add "because I could". Hell if I could, I would add one!

The idea of shift lights, and the reason I want one, is to indicate the most efficient place to change gear. What I wanna do is have my bike dyno'd see where the power dropps off (if it does) and to see where the I would have to change to get back into the meat of the power curve when I change gears, when Ive found the correct point Ill set the chift light to go BLING (pun intended) when ive hit that point indicating that this is the best place to change gears to keep me in the power.
I absolutely know what youre saying about hearing and feeling but a shift light will give you a more accuate indication of when to change gears so you can keep accelerating most efficiently, thats why drag cars have em.
Hope my explanation helps.

i'd like one but dont know where to get one.

i'm sure if i get one i'll be able to fit it on.

what would be even better would be an lcd screen with the gears on it.

I have a shift indicator but not a gear indicator. Wish they incorporated one of those into my LCD gauge. Oh, that and a freakin fuel gauge! You can get one here mina: http://www.motofx.com.au/mfpartsinfo.ph ... &mfpro=931

$215 Phwark :?

i might look around for some schematics and see if i can make one.

it doesnt look like a big unit. and the way they say its a DIY, it must be a simple design.

i'll check out the web and see what i come up with.

They cut the ignition momentarily to drop the revs so you can change up gears without having to back off the throttle.

So they cut the ignition when the clutch is disengaged? sounds cool!

No, just when you put pressure on the gear lever, which means quick clutchless gear changes.
