Longevity of bikes, trading prices, etc...

I've been thinking about what I'm going to do with my current ride, the 02 9R. It's clocking up k's at a fair rate (looks like about 25k per year) and I'm wondering what the best way is to minimise depreciation losses!

I figure I have two real choices:
1. Sell the bike and get another one (with very low k's) each year, so I don't lose out too much with a high k's bike.

2. Keep the bike forever until it's well used, at which point the k's aren't as much of a concern (difference between what you'd pay for a 100,000km bike and a 120,000km bike can't be that much, right?)

So what are your thoughts? I do really like the 9R, and it doesn't bore me yet (not sure if it ever will!). So what to do? Obviously using a bike this much is going to cost a packet, but ways to minimise that would be good! :P

yea the problem with option 1 is ...THE COST...

i went thru this satge of doin that (zx6r, then vtr1000 then cbr 929 in 2 yrs) and boy did it hit my pocket...

now wot ive realised is....ride the thing to the ground (my 929 now has abt 60,000km and a bit of gravel rash)..i stopped spending $$ on it...now that its worth bugger all, ill either turn it into a track toy, or..i dunno...but it is worth twice as much insured as for sale...but a track toy would be fun...it owes me nothing (bought it for $10k- had it 4 yrs..flogged bejesus out of it, crashed it, flipped it, starved it of oil ...)

thats what id do... keep it till its farked..then turn it into a trackie and buy a newer bike...otherwise ur losing $3k a yr and still only got one bike

Bikes become very cheap after about 50K. After 70 they are dirt cheap. As no one wants them. Loads of people think 15,000 klms is high for a bike!!!

So you either have to keep it for 20K's and flick it over, or keep it for 220K's and maintain it.

Here are some scenarios.

02 9R with 20,000klms private sale 9-10K. With 70K- 5500-6000.

So lets say you wanted to trade in your 9 now with 70K on it and they give you 6k. Then a late model low K 9 will probably be 10K. So it's going to cost you 4K real.

If you ride it 25K a year, and you can coax 200,000 klms out of the motor (A mate of mine has just done 200,000 on his 929 Blade!) It will be worth probably 1K at the end of it which will take you 8 years. So definately hanging onto it for ages might be the cheaper option. But then you don't have a perfect looking late model bike which works perfectly and nothings worn out!

..and given the obscenely large number of bikes of all types and descriptions which only venture out to the innercity cafe strip once a month or less, who can blame them?

(remember the green '01 ZX9 from the other week which still had its original tyres on it?)

My preferred approach would be to keep it for ~40,000km, then releagate it to commuting duties while something newer and quicker takes over scratching duties.

The only way to not lose $$$ on a car or bike is to keep it as long as possible and look after it.

And remember, a car/bike always seems to be worth more to the person selling it than to the buyer.

Honestly, two bikes are the way to go. The amount of tyres, oil and other consumables you go through, as well as the amount of servicing required, is governed by the total kms you travel, so your maintenance costs are no higher than they would be for just one bike. If, like me, you like to live on the edge and without comprehensive insurance, the only additional outlay is the cost of another rego. That's ~$500-ish a year; big deal.

not if u have seasonal rego (here in sa) where u can just rego ur nice bike for 3-6 months of the year, and rego ur hack commuter/track toy for the crappy 6 months of the year...now THERE is an idea...

Price is also determined on demand basis as well as K's, the demand being based a lot on the appeal of the bike, f*ck what everyones own personal perspective on it is, a majority of the market is being driven on who's riding what in MotoGP, Superbikes and the like and how successful they are, lets face it, Rossi rides an R1 and if he does well then sales on Yamaha's outstrip all other brands, if Hayden does well then Honda sales take over, pity we got De Puniet and Shikano, looking to next year when MotoGP goes 800cc the price of your 9's, 10's, 12's and other litre bikes will drop simply because the machines are not being placed in the public eye and the demand for those machines will drop just as it did for the 3/4 litre bikes when they went to the litre class, the price of 3/4 litre bikes will rise again to reflect the popularity of the class simply because of the fact the big boys on the MotoGP, etc. bandwagon are riding them, if in doubt look to Ducati who whilst still in the tesing stage of their new 800cc bike for MotoGP '07 has seen an increase of sale for that class of machine, this will in turn increase the price of s/hand 3/4 litre bikes and those who can say " hey I own a such and such machine" will be able to ask a higher end price for their machines, I currently own a '93 ZXR750L which I was going to sell this year, since the anouncement of the 800cc class I withdrew the bike from sale under advice from a couple of bike shops who I have dealt with for years and they tell me that currently with 60,000K's on it i'll be lucky to get $3500 to $4000 for it, but, if I wait till mid season of the MotoGP, the K's won't really matter because unlike many 600's and 800's the ZXR750L has a true racing heritage and I can use that to my benefit to sell it and the asking price could see me get up to $6000 from someone looking for a race toy, of course other things come into consideration to get that sort of money but like I said i've been dealing with these shops for over 20yrs and haven't gone wrong yet, it will be interesting to see how the market goes next year whichever way it goes but I think you'll find with the new class of MotoGP you'll see a flood of litre bikes hit the market and prices drop. Just my humble opinion folks don't take it personally, and even tho Shikano and De puniet ride my favourite Brand of bike, MAN DO THOSE 2 WANKERS SUCK.

If not for a couple of Kishy's posts, that would have to be the most flawed reasoning I've read on any topic today.

In the early 90's, when the ZXR750 was cleaning up in Endurance and Superbike racing, it was outsold by the FireBlade and the ZZ-R1100.

Where's either of those two bikes' racing heritage, apart from the FireBlade's eligibility to race in the Senior TT on the Isle of Man?

The idea that people buy bikes that remind them the most of bikes being raced with success at the time is a furphee which, hilariously, motorcycle industry insiders do actually buy into.

If you're happy with it mate keep it, 9's a good bike and you can save more money for when you need a new bike :)

If you love your bike enough then why bother selling it. The way i see it, i am going to buy a 06 636 v.soon and i know i am going to rack up a few thousand km's then jump upto the next size and either use it as a work hack or a trackie...

Another idea would to be to get the motor rebuilt. IF you LOVE bike why not a rebuild the motor... and regularly check all the components that wear... and keep them lubed or greased etc etc... that way even if your bike does have high km's it will still be in good cond.

Its something we all have to live with... at the end of the day yer bike won't make u money. So if u see a bike that yuou LOVE buy it, ride it like u would, Treat it well and it will last u ages! by the time u r sick of it, u will have saved enough money for your new one... Then u can unrego the previous bike, trackie it and yer laughing!

Good thread here as I am also in the brink of having a high-flyer a.k.a. 100k :shock: ... after looking around price etc, I've concluded that it's not worth replacing the bike. It runs really well anyway... and at 300k later it will be a track toy :D ... of course my next bike in 3 yrs. a.k.a ZX10R will have its speed sensor disabled :wink:

its a sad thought buying a new bike and racking km's up on it. But really its fact of life. Just maintain it to the best u can and it should last a LONG time!
