Any progress to report, Richard ? I'd be happy to take this off your hands if ever you lose interest; had a 1000 A1 and A4 (Mk II) myself in the past, and I'd love another Mk II as a project bike.
Cheers,
Brian

It's near the end of the line with about 5 bikes in front so nothing will happen for a while.
I've allways liked this bike but I could use more room in the garage. I'll pm you my phone number.

Re: I.D. a Z1000 I just bought
Almost certainly Dave, but it probably won't be for a while unfortunately - I need to get a job that pays something more than starvation-level wages first !
BTW, it won't be a resto, much more of a modification project. I'm a big fan of things like the attached pic. Sadly, without the Ohlins forks and bespoke swingarm, mind you
Cheers,
Brian

Re: I.D. a Z1000 I just bought
Gos, wondering if I can pick your brains please ? From the full engine number (KZT00DE 008xxx), the cases at least correspond to a '78 Z1R according to http://www.kzrider.com/info/134-1978-z1-r-1000 and a model guide that was passed on to me. Cylinders are 1015 cc, camchain tensioner is manual. However, the exhaust studs are 8mm, which according to a long Word doc on Z1 Power UK makes the head MK II. Then there's the ignition ...Gosling1 wrote:That is definitely a MkII motor. /snip/ The engine side-covers may have been changed out for earlier ones, this is not unusual at all....
Unless the cam sprockets have been changed, you normally don't see MkII heads on earlier bottom ends. The early motors run 15 tooth cranks and 30 tooth cam sprockets, MkII motors have 16 tooth cranks and 32 tooth cam sprockets.
Can I ask please, what was it that made you so definite it's a Mk II motor ? Something about the head perhaps ? Wondering if someone along the line has fragged the original engine, found one from a Z1R at a wreckers, and bunged on as many Mk II parts as were salvageable.
BTW, chassis is very definitely A4; compliance plate is 12/79, but the Kawa name plate on the lower clamp and the remote reservoir on the rear master cylinder mark it as an A4 rather than A3 (which ofcourse you'd suspect given the late year compliance date).
Very, very happy with my new toy - big thanks to Richard for letting it go, I'm really looking forward to getting it up and running in good time, it's already bringing back so many pleasant memories of days long past.
Cheers,
Brian

Re: I.D. a Z1000 I just bought
The Z1R - although it used all the square-style bodywork and triangle-shaped sidecovers like the later Mk2 models - still used the older z1/z900 style motor. It still had cam-covers with rounded cam-cap ends. I am pretty sure it still used points as well, not electronic ignition. They were 1015cc blocks, this size did not change from the first Z1000 A1 in 1977. The 8mm exhaust studs were introduced with the 1976 Z900A4, so these are not indicative of a Mk2 head. I am surprised that Z Power reckon these are a Mk2 modification ?greenman43 wrote:.....Can I ask please, what was it that made you so definite it's a Mk II motor ? Something about the head perhaps ? What convinced me is the combination of OEM electronic ignition and the cam cover. But - it is possible that someone has just used early crankcases and filled them with Mk2 bits. The engine number may correspond to a 1978 engine .....but the only way to give a definitive answer is to pull the cam cover off, and count the teeth on the cam sprocket - either one it doesn't matter. If there are 30 teeth it is an early motor with later ignition fitted (not uncommon as its a bolt-on mod). If there are 32 teeth its a Mk2 motor with some early engine covers fitted (also not uncommon - I have done this exact mod on the engine in the Black Pearl).
It only takes about 1/2 a can of bourbon to take the cam cover off
