Mick,
is it tripping the breaker ? If not it's not likely to be a short........dodgy connection maybe.......best found by "off" tuning a radio and tracing it along( near, not touching  ) the cable.........crackles like buggery when your near the break

mate i dare say if its that old it wont be tripping any breakers. it will be an old nilsen fedral fuse. Unless its had a recent refit.

Actually Guys, I believe it is a short somewhere between the Active supply & Switch Wire causing the problem.
As this is equivelent to what happens in normal operation when you flick the switch it would not cause the breaker to trip....not that there are any breakers.

Anyways, will go back at some stage and have a look in the ceiling if we can get access.
Learn well all the rules, so as to know how to break them in the proper manner.

Is the power looped at the light, or at the switch? Older installations usually are at the light, and could possibly be where it's either gotten too hot and melted the insulation or god knows what.

That'd be the first place I'd look, before I started climbing into ceilings

Also, if its REALLY old and wired in VIR, I'd be taking it up with the landlord if you're renting Mick
I wouldnt bother finding the fault if that was the case, just replace the offending wiring on that circuit!

what u reckon the insulation has deterated and is causing a short, or did a rat bite into it (could of been mick)?

Is there fuses or just the service fuse?
