Re: another work rant
If you're already talking to someone ask them if they think you should take some time off. All you need is a workcover medcial certificate and you're off. It certainly sounds like you're working for an arsehat.

Re: another work rant
I don't mean to be a bastard & tell you stuff you don't want to hear, but...
If you are that professional in your work ethic, would you not use some initiative to either find another job or sit down with your boss & explain your circumstances?
I'm sorry mate, but with an attitude like yours, I wouldn't employ you.
<I think my Mum told me that if I had nothing nice to say to simply shut up. Sorry Mum!>
No hard feelings mate & I hope you find a career you're happier in.

At least you live AT some of the best beaches in NSW. Go down there and chill. Amazing what water can do for work stress.
Wish I never moved from Newcastle. Can't do my current job there, either, at least in a self-employed capacity.

Re: another work rant
sounds like you work with a very similar boss to that of a friend of mine, similar industry (of sorts, he does freight). He's jack of it, looking around quietly.
It's a small industry though, REALLY small.

Re: another work rant
You must work for a really shit shipping agent. I thought our ports, particularly those that are handling resources, were so over capacity it wasn't funny. If you blokes are overstaffed you must be run by dumb and dumber.
As others have said mate, get out and find something else. We're so close to full employment at the moment it's never going to get any better. We can't get warehouse staff in Sydney, Brisbane is damn near impossible to find people and WA is ridiculous. Nexcastle is a coal town so I would've thought things were pretty good. We've got a Steel distribution business there and it's going pretty well, demand is strong so there's infrastructure and building happening. That probably doesn't help you but if your not getting bites locally there's a problem. Start by getting your resume sorted, be realistic in the jobs you're looking at and then maybe look at how you perform in interviews etc.
Good luck

Shipping aye?
Sounds like you're in Husbandry...
And as far as I read, you're getting paid to do nothing , I dont think thats too bad a predicament.
Why not spend the time broadening your knowledge and skill set.
All this talk of leave and work cover etc leaves me of a pretty shit impression IMHO

Re: another work rant
I would have to agree with some of the other sentiments. Firstly, get out! If it's that bad what are you still doing there? Secondly, I hope you are not thinking of the workcover avenue. Boredom causing stress is drawing a long bow isn't it?
A frank and intelligent conversation with management, without emotion, would create a solution one way or another in any business I have ever worked in!!
