Hi Glen - my own experience with the *hi*-octane stuff out there is that BP Ultimate is exactly that - the pick of the bunch. Unfortunately there are no BP's in my local area, so I generally use the local Mobil oulet, and the Hi-O stuff they sell. The 12 seems to run fine on this, mind you I have only clocked up 500k so far, so not sure what will happen at the 1000k service......will ask the mechanics at the local dealer if there is any jiggery-pokery with ignition timing at the first service (this would surprise me if it was the case.) After having run straight aviation petrol ( some people call it AvGas, it is actually just aeroplane fuel  ) with a nominated RON of 105-110, I can happily say that nothing else sold out of a pump even comes close. It is a true hi-octane fuel ( sadly for track use only). If your bike has since stopped pinging under similiar conditions, you probably just copped a bad batch of fuel. This happens even with the best distributors from time to time. If you catch it in time ( ie straight after fill-er-up mate,) then throw in a bottle of octane-booster. Not recommended on a regular basis, but will help with a tank of shit fuel that has your bike pinging where it didn't ping before.

Here is a Fact of Life - every single Z1000Mk11 sold in Australia had its ignition timing retarded almost 5 degrees from stock, prior to being shipped here. Apparently the factory got wind of the shit fuel sold in Australia, and wound the timing back to cope. You cannot tell this from the standard timing marks near the ignitor coils, they *look* just fine. They run much better with this corrected. Wonder if much has changed in the last 25 years ???
