04 ZX10R Revs Breaking Down - Need Help

Post by Cruissy »

Hi Guys, I'm having a problem with the revs breaking down on my 2004 ZX10R. It's been a track bike for the last 2 years, and when I come out of a corner onto a straight and fully open up the throttle, the revs start bogging down at 8,000 RPM, taking a long time to reach 10,000 RPM and by then I'm at the end of the straight not having changed gears once. I've tried at half throttle, and slightly improves response, but the revs still bog down. It's not like a rev limiter effect, it's feels more like a poor fuelling effect.

Thinking it may be the plugs or air, I pulled them Iridiums out, adjusted the gaps and cleaned the K&N air filter. On the next track day, the problem remained the same. Can anyone help with suggestions as to what could be the problem.

I had a similar problem a while ago that sounds like what you're going through, my fuel pump filter was partially blocked and wouldn't allow enough fuel through when holding the throttle wide open.

From what I remember you need to remove the pump from the base of the fuel tank and clean the gauze-like filter (looks like a white-ish tea bag). If you do a search over on ZX-10R.net you should be able to find a step by step guide explaining how to get it done.

Thanks Ronin, I have a workshop manual and have googled how to remove. I can give this a go.

I've also noticed that many ZX10R owners are having fuel pump problems and having to replace the pump. Is this also a likelihood, or does cleaning the filter usually resolve the issue?

Fuel pump was my first thought. Good luck with it.
It's really all about standing around drinking Dave's beer.

Have any of you guys tried those ebay Chinese replacement fuel pumps? Links below.

Are they any good? Do they last? Are they noisy?

I had a similar problem with my 05 zx10r.
Turned out the fuel pump had died. Replaced the fuel pump with a second hand one from a wrecker and it was as good as new.

deffo fuel pump issues - MickLC had this exact problem on his Crim a few years ago. He got a replacement fuel pump from the US at about 1/4 the price that Kawasaki wanted for an OEM pump......

as far as those $50 fuel pumps from China are concerned - you get what you pay for. They are rubbish and a complete woftam.

Yeah definitely time for a new fuel pump. :)
Stay clear of the chinese knock off fuel pumps  .
Here is an example below. You maybe able to get one cheaper somewhere else but stick to OEM.
