Phillip island ride days

Post by Jonnymac »

So it would appear that they have finally come to their senses and are placing transponders on bikes to confirm people are riding in the correct groups for their talents...
Starting from Monday.

Good to see they are now being proactive about things. I've also found that they seen more consumer minded these days with rider reward programs and the deal at world supers of purchase a track day and receive the second for $99.

:)

Yes, I was out last Saturday and the system was being trialled, don't know of anyone who was moved though.

It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.
I don't think they'll use it to sort everyone in order (think of the admin nightmare switching that many people around), but it may quite well be used to move outliers and also to tell people they have to slow down since thye booked themselves into that group, until a space in a faster group opens up.

It will be interesting anyway, however it ends up being implemented.

I'd love to get my hands on the raw (anonymised) data. Think of the data mining & mapping potential :)

Don't know why they don't just give lap times then people would have an idea on what group they should be in.......I'm going on Monday and put myself in medium as first time to the island for me but would be good if I can hopefully move up as the day goes on I met their criteria for medium group. Only ridden broadford and winton first time at the island on a bike. Can't wait :kuda:

Yes, didn't work great on its first day of use.

The moment riders got told they were being tracked, rider behavior went stupid.

They had 8 crashes by the end of the first session from white to green, at the end of the second session; white > green riders got called to attend a brief & told to tone it down.

Didn't work, meat & recovery wagon on overtime, every session had been cut short; averaging 3 laps per session.

Interesting, I didn't connect the carnage with people trying to prove they were faster until I read this, you could well be right, white was crazy. For once yellow worked pretty well, very few incidents through the day. I doubt they will use the data to swap too many riders though I'd imagine they are after the guy who is 5-10 seconds slower than the next slowest in the group. Wonder if they ever make the call that someone is too slow for white? (banished to the go-kart track)

It would be interesting to see the anonymised data though

Incidentally, anyone know who was doing the photos last weekend at EC?

Thanks Smiffy, I figured Keith would be at the races, good to know he still had it covered though, I'll keep an eye on his site.
