Re: USB chargers
Or if you don't want to drill holes in your bike somewhere, just get a normal socket and wire it up under the seat. Around $2.50 at jaycar.
Terminals for battery connection, crimp to wire, inline fuse, wire to socket. I wired a small on/off switch on mine too.
Or do a proper job using a relay wired to an ignition fed line like the rear tail light.
Use enough wire to let you bring the socket out to a tankbag. Power your GPS/phone from that using it's own usb cable. Simples!

Re: USB chargers
Just remember that iPhones and iPods are fussy bastards regarding charge current and the device often won't charge unless it sees the right voltage on the data pins (to make it think it's connected to a pc or certified charger ). You can put a hack together to make it work on an existing cable or just use an iPod certified charger instead.

Re: USB chargers
Iphone 4 with a 500ma usb charger with gps running continually will run the gps ok but will take for ever to actually charge the battery up.
Iphone 5 would gradually lose battery level in the same circumstances.
Recommend at least 1amp usb charger to run gps AND to charge up the battery for both iphone 4 & 5.
