Road Tyre Pressures.

Post by Kermit »

Gauging what road tyre pressures are people running.

I'm finding that for touring on some of our lovely roads (sarcasm) its a tad to harsh; I'm sacrificing spinal comfort & some grip in the twisties.

Road pressure (cold) according to handbook.

F 36psi (120/70)
R 42psi (180/55)

So what are ya running & what pressures would run on this profile road touring twisties?

I know on the track 30/30 is ideal.

try 34f/36r cold as a starting point and go from there :kuda: it will probably feel a lot better.

how cold is cold? or should I run lower cold pressures over winter? noticed I lost about 2lbs when the weather turned cold a few weeks back.
I've topped it up to 34/38 cold and its OK for a while, but its a bit skittish when I get some heat into the tyres. Should I drop to 32/36 or 33/37 or something like that?

Anywhere from 30-36 front and 34-42 rear depending on the temperature, how much the bike is loaded up, what type of riding and what tyres are fitted.

It's better to understand how pressure effects the tyre performance and get a feel for what the tyres are doing than ask others what they run. Some riders push the front harder than others so they need to run higher pressures so the tyre doesn't deform too much, while the rest need lower pressures to generate enough heat to make the tyre stick. Some tyres flex easier than others, some bikes and riders are heavier than others, some suspension is stiff while other bikes are soft etc, etc. There are too many variables to just ask a general 'what do you run?'. In saying that, I think 36/42 is too hard for a small person on a 600, riding on a public road, in the middle of winter. I'll second Gos and say to try 34/36 as a starting point to see how it feels and increase or decrease the pressure from there.

By the way; what tyres are on the bike and what static and rider sag are you running?
