I'm starting to think I should carry basic trauma pack, IV fluids, bandages, splints, space blanket.dave#3 wrote:It wasn't good - rider didn't make itphilbo wrote:has there been any news on the wollombi crash?
Blood loss & pain are usually the first things that need to addressed & response time is pretty slow out there.
Not having a go at emergency services in the hunter, its the way things are set up, ambo time is about 30-40 mins and if no ambo is available the fireys attend.
Once upon a time off duty doctors/nurses could carry & administer morphine/fentanyl when attending roadside trauma, state health minister put a stop to that.

I don't have IV fluids, pain meds or a splint but I do carry a decent first-aid kit under my seat which certainly contains bandages and a space blanket - in fact I think the current one was supplied but the NSW ambos after they destroyed my last one that was covered in blood from an OPH squid.blackster wrote:I'm starting to think I should carry basic trauma pack, IV fluids, bandages, splints, space blanket.dave#3 wrote:It wasn't good - rider didn't make itphilbo wrote:has there been any news on the wollombi crash?

Somebody with your skills should really think about doing the same if you don't already Phil - you could do more with what I carry than I could do with twice the kit.

If I showed you the two packs that I used to carry & would like to carry, I would of reached home from putty this morning.dave#3 wrote:

I more than happy to render assistance where I can, but legally I'm restricted to BLS (basic life support) off duty.
A few years ago, I ended up in coroners court for administering ALS, (advanced life support) in a road side trauma. I decompressed a punctured lung with an airway needle, set up & ran an IV because of bleeding.
The person had later died in hospital because of traumatic brain injury, death following being admitted or surgery within 24 hours is an automatic coroners.
The coroner found that my actions were appropriate & had the skill to administer it, however said that if you had did something wrong you could be sued, face charges and that you are not covered by any indemnity when off duty to engage in ALS. I should only render BLS like a normal citizen.
They law has put us in a catch 22 when trying to save a life, regardless I will always put the injured first.

It's a shame you have to weigh those things up.
Still, I'd rather have you (or another similarly educated person) with a first aid kit, doing BLS while waiting for the ambos, than a mate who doesn't remember much from his high school first aid course!

I don't doubt you Phil, but I'd have thought that unless you were drunk, under the influence of drugs, or pretending to be a HCP you'd be covered against liability under the same Good Samaritan Act as non-trained people administering BLS.

I have been on 2 crash scenes with Dave#3 and wouldn't mind him looking after me in an incident....One was the learner on th old road with a missing knee and the other was the RV on its roof on the oxley very comforting and those dreamy eye's

I think I may have brought it up in one of those threads about people carrying kits as with the knee guy nobody had anything untill we flagged down a car.....
And as for the 2 poor buggers on the weekend RIP it will affect many lives

Re: Old pacific highway - motorcycles crash.
At the risk of seeming insensitive, I pose the question - are the crashes on the OR mainly unskilled riders/returning riders ( ie - rode 5/10/15 etc years ago ) ?
It is a technically challenging stretch of tar, and not forgiving of mistakes.

Re: Old pacific highway - motorcycles crash.
Unfortunately most bikes these days cant fit a basic first aid kit. I'm only able to squeeze in my puncture repair kit in the arse of my bike.
In saying that i do carry a backpack on long rides.

Spoke to a mate who saw the one on the old road happen. Not sure about unskilled but he certainly was pegging along.

Re: Old pacific highway - motorcycles crash.
BLS is not an issue as has never been to my knowledge, perhaps I've worded it in correctly ALS (AR, advanced resuscitation) in terms of my training refers to techniques I used in that given situation.dave#3 wrote:I don't doubt you Phil, but I'd have thought that unless you were drunk, under the influence of drugs, or pretending to be a HCP you'd be covered against liability under the same Good Samaritan Act as non-trained people administering BLS.

Unless you have a ICU back round & or have done retrieval you are not trained to learned them.
Regarding the crash at PITS on a saturday, there's mention that the rider suffered a cardiac arrest prior to hitting the armco.
