ZX7R vs ZX9R interchangeable parts?

Post by timeeh »

Morning peoples, my names Tim. Long time lurker but now i need help so i though i better sign up :) Long story short i was heading off to tassie on the weekend got about 2hrs short of Melbourne and the gear rack and backpack jumped off the back of the bike and inbetween the rear tyre and rear seat... Needless to say the big skid eventually turned into a high-side which in turn bent the frame :(
So now i'm looking at possibly getting a ZX9 and i was wondering what parts were interchangeable between the 2 (if any) they are both 96' models. The ZX9 i'm looking at looks as if it may have some slight damage to the front end so I was wondering if the wheels and even the whole front end were interchangeable between the 2? Or what other parts may/could be swapped between the 2.

Oh and if your bored and want to see the nice photos of what a backpack can do to a bike, just have a quiz here ;) P.P.S Completed the Bonang run b4 coming off, thank god :)

Man, what a shame :(
Not too many bits are interchangeable between the ZX7 & the B model 9s but notably in your case the complete front & rear ends will swap over but the handlebar position will be a lot lower with the 7 front end on the 9 because the 7 forks aren't long enough to have the clipons mounted above the top clamp.
The 7 swingarm is 25mm shorter than the 9 but if you put the whole 7 rearend into the 9 you'll get a linkage ratio & shock valving that's better suited to sports than sports-touring & the shorter swinger will make it steer a bit sharper too.
Now that I think about it, a bike with ZX9 power & ZX7 handling would be a good jigger.

The 7s & 9s use the same top & bottom headstock bearings & I'm 99% sure the stems are the same length but if they're not, it's easy to press them out, swap them over & press 'em back in again.

And the rear swinger, do you think that would bolt on?

Pics are coming, nothing pretty as the previous owner spat it down the road... but a reasonably thorough inspection from myself and my suspension/mechanic guy tells me it's all good, no scratches or bumps anywhere. New set of fairings will set me back a touch under $500 and a pair of mirrors and she'll be good as new :) Just doing a oil and plug change tommoro and get it all set for a day at wakefield next Friday, then i'll start with the cosmetics after that.

Long time no update... Here are a couple of pics of when i picked it up

So i ended up going to fix it route (or try to) to save a few pennys AKA the minister for war and finance tells me not to spend more money. So with a bit of bog and paint i ended up with this
Image
And as of a couple of weeks ago it is now all black except the wheels (still yet to get a pic) And as for the rear wheel of the ZX7, i still havn't attempted this, but still going to at some point. As for wakefield i managed to punt it round there and got a "high" 1:16 at one point, faster than i ever was on my ZX7? strange being the 9 is a tourer. But anyway, all in all what a sweet bike :)
