I'm flying up to the Castle on Thursday for my sisters wedding and will be looking for places to entertain kids and drink cans.....

We're staying as Jesmond......

Not from there but try Nobby's beach for relaxing times with the kids and try the bar opposite the docks. Not sure what its called though.

nice little native zoo not far from Jesmond,Blackbutt reserve i think it called,great for kids but not sure about the can drinking though,

Kotara has a Lollipops for the littlies

Honeysuckle is good for food and drink
Wickham motorcycle cafe had decent coffee with some old bikes to look at.

Hamilton Pub is where the action is at on Fri and Sat night

yeah blackbutt reserve has a good free small zoo for the kids,not far up the hill from westfield kotara, also if you have a car speers point park has an awesome flying fox and play area for the kids.
a couple of kid friendly pubs for eating at are jewells tavern in jewells and caves beach hotel

Newie is a great place - Nobby's is the beach where the Pasha Bulka was stuck a few years ago. This time of year there could still be a fair up behind Nobby's in the car-park ? Caves Beach is great for the kids, lots of stuff to explore.

One day the cook & I will probably move back there........I love the beaches around Newie.....
