Saw a Koala on road near Esk recently. Thought it was a dog from the distance.

Re: Koala's cross here....
That couldve been nasty. Im probably gonna take a beating from the wildlife crew here by why the hell did the car stop. Fair enough he didnt swat the Koala but he could have killed the guy on the bike. To make it worse it was just over the crest of a hill.
Better to nail the poor old Koala then potentially kill someone else.
One of the fatal accidents recently was a knobhead swerving onto the wrong side of the wrong to miss a dog. The dog survived but unfortunately the dude head onned a car coming the other way and killed them.

They do say when learning to drive to just hit animals rather than try to avoid and cause accidents.
Following at safe distances works well. But crests f hill don't help.
As for the bloke who hit the car, the 1st guy managed to stop at the koala, so did the car. Bikes behind should have too?

I counted a 2 second gap between riders, no room for error there

Yep, as unfortunate as it is, we were always taught to hit small/med critters head on rather than swerve, especially when riding in a group/traffic.Wattie wrote:They do say when learning to drive to just hit animals rather than try to avoid and cause accidents.

Re: Koala's cross here....
Yeah I agree in theory but sometimes your reflexes just kick in. I know I've reacted and dodged something without taking the second to think about it. Maybe being aware of your surroundings also helps (in that your reflexes react, but your other senses are also aware of what's around you, so you swerve left into a ditch instead of right into a truck for example). But then there's always just dumb bad luck too. I don't think the guy that swerved into oncoming traffic made the choice to do so - probably just saw something in front of him and his brain screamed "Avoid hitting stuff!" at him and his reactions took him the wrong way (like a bloody kangaroo - just as likely to jump into a car as away from it). I don't think it's completely fair to call that dude a knobhead, since I doubt he would've chosen the path he did, had he been able to analyse the situation with a few more seconds. Sometimes shit just happens

Only thing wrong there is that some riders rode too closely............I see this all the time on group rides and wonder why?

Re: Koala's cross here....
a car stopped on the road (the white 4wd coning the other way) is often a sign something is not quite right. seemed to have its lights on too.

Re: Koala's cross here....
Considering there were bikes both in front and behind the car the bikes may have been passing the car when they all came upon the drop bear, so safe following distances were all out the window?
