Need a safe way to heat up a bracket on fuel tank

Post by map »

Hi all
Would like some advice on heating up a farring bracket on my fuel tank. The bike is a zzr 600 1994 need to heat up the farring bracket to make it easy to bend back into shap. the bracket is on the left side near the fuel tap.
How would I go about this without blowing my self up.
Do I fill the tank up with feul so that there is less air gap, as i understand it the fumes are what expolde or should I fill it up with water then heat up the bracket with a blow tourch or oxy.
I have tried to bend it cold it wont move where i wont it to.

Cheers

I would fill with water. When the job is done, tip out water, rinse with plenty methylated spirit and blow dry the fuck outta the seams inside tank.

Still be careful with the heat though laughing7.gif

Take it off, empty fuel and fill with water :)
Heat and bend away, wash with metho/ kero and leave to dry, if u have an air compressor that'll help with the drying, if not a hot day in the sun will evaporate the left over water.

Fill with fuel and enjoy 8)

Nitrogen gas!
Drain then purge the tank of fumes and keep the gas running while you heat the bracket then cool it quickly when you finish!

This one!

Or get some cool gel, spray it on the tank and go nuts with the oxy!

This spray gel, once I saw it sprayed on cardboard, even oxy/acetylene could cause it to catch fire.

If you drain the tank & let it sit in the hot sun for a day or two possibly more until all the fuel has evaporated No fuel = no problem
we have done this for cutting tanks for bucket race bikes, if you are concerned, put 1/2 ltr of alcohol in it, swirl around drain & let that evaporate before starting..... its less flamable ;)

Yeh you can use nitrogen or the gel, I've also seen and used the gel and I use nitrogen at work through my refrigeration pipes all the time. But there's no way I would be risking my life on those two things.
Pull the tank off, empty it,it's your life

if this is just one of the small steel brackets that is part of the tank - if it bent out of shape once, it will bend back into shape. You should not have to use gas or LPG or any of that other shit - just get a bigger hammer.
