Hi guys!
I'm new to the bike scene and new to the forum, I've read the FAQ and hopefully everything is good.
I've got a 2009 ninja 250r (EX250) (I know, learner bike) and it's second hand unfortunately, and I had an incident riding the other day where a bottom bolt came out and oil spilled everywhere, all over the back tyre and everything, and I'm having trouble determining what sort of bolt it is I need to replace. It is one of two bolts next to the oil filter cover, which is a 12mm x 1.5 thread, with an 8mm allan key head which is recessed into the bolt, where the thread is. I also believe it is hollow and allows oil to flow through it or something. This is assuming it is the same as the bolt opposite. I've tried to get the other bolt out to compare, but I've broken two breaker bars trying so that's probably not an option. I've checked out engine diagrams and it just doesn't seem to be listed, so I'm wondering if anybody knows a part number or somewhere I could find out the information I need to replace it!
I took a picture, in case it helps =]
Thanks!

Re: EX250 engine (grommet?) bolt problem
Sump plug?
Actually, it seems that the drain plug on this one is now further back and lower. That missing one is the old drain plug from the EX250H models that is apparently unused on the 250r. I hope you stopped the motor before the oil all fell out?

Re: EX250 engine (grommet?) bolt problem
hi, thanks for the quick reply
Yeah I've seen a pic in the service manual (not sure if its the exact right one) but it showed the bolt missing. although I figured with how clean the thread is, and that oil is obviously dripping from there that it is in fact needed. Is it the sump plug? I didn't think so but I'm still new to bikes haha.
and no I didn't ride it without oil, luckily I was about 20m from work when this happened!

Short answer, yes. You need a replacement one to put in that hole.DamonW wrote: Is it the sump plug?
When you change the oil it would seem you drain it out the one at the rear.

Oh so it is the sump! I figured it was the same as the bolt next to it. Thanks so much for the help! Greatly appreciated
