Buying a Stat Write Off?

Post by Johnnyflash »

Well, toying with the idea of getting a track only bike that i can use for trakdays (and maybe some racing in the future).

Had a good hard think to myself after having the Crim out in EC a couple of months ago and trying to realise why i was 100% commited, and the conclusion is that I'm afraid I'll drop it!

This is why i bought my 1st tracky a few years ago, and after having a track only bike the thrill of going flat out detracts from track days with a roady!

I'd be handy enough on the tools to strip down and race prepare a road bike but I'm wondering if its the cheapest/best option.

Dont care about the fact that the bike would recorded a Stat write off, a crash/slide or 2 on track in inevitable anyway!

It this the best option to get into a cheap tracky?

Buy one already trackified...way cheaper. :kuda:

Usually, but not always. Baddie built his up cheaper than you could have bought it. It all depends on how cheap you get the write off in the first place.

Watch ebay. I picked up my zx6 09 model which had been dropped and uninsured. So its not a writeoff and was an easy fix.

Depends on your budget but a track ready bike can be cheaper in the end but remember no matter whats been done to it youll still need a suspension setup (someone else may have it 'sorted' but its not necessarily right for you).

Happy searching :)

Cheers dudes :kuda:

I dont mind if the bike is a write off or not, i would actually prefer it to be written off and then it would surely be cheaper than a repairable bike?

I have seen track bikes built from write off's that were extremely badly damaged, but in NSW the write off criteria seems to be very strict.
i'm thinking that you could buy a Stat write off in NSW that was not that badly damaged, for cheap money, convert it to a race bike and generate some income from selling the undamaged road going parts to pay for track goodies?!

Wheres the best place to look for stat write off's? Ebay? Auctions?

Something fuel injected, 600 cc (or 636cc  ) from 2003 >..........
Wouldn't be fussy on the make.... 06+ R6 or 07+ ZX6 would be preferable tho.....

Write off or not you still gotta get it sorted to the point of it being track ready. Keep an eye on here, formula extreme website, or google motorbike auctions and the usual manheim / pickles etc come up.

Not sure the laws in NSW have provided more written off bikes or not. They may be repairing them because the salvage value is alot less now?

Food for thought that! Cheers!

I'll keep my eyes peeled, not 100% in the position to buy just yet, I have to butter up the wife first with some nice shiney things so to keep her attention away from my little plans.............

Yes I was like you but I owned a new 08 blade with all the bling, did a few track days shitting myself thinking well what if I drop it.
So I went looking at prebuilt track bikes, yes with all the gear , from suspension upgrades to 520 kits, but the thing I was worried about was the motor ( to be honest without it you have nothing), even if they have low Km’s on the clock 100% of the time a track bike is running its flat –out, no holding back.
When comparing road use and specially a 1000cc we very rarely even get close to use anything more than 80% of its true power, even less for some.
So went to Manheim on a tuesday afternoon just to have a look at what was available and on that day there wasn’t anything, so the following week I went the pickles auction at bankstown and seen a 2009 blade with 3500km road kms, frame wasn't touched, both foot pegs had no damage, chain looked new(OEM grease still on it)…the only issues were damaged clip-on (RHS) and a ripped up CF exhaust. With pickles you can go online to bid or even listen to the auction. Well that blade ended up going for $4300.00 + $700 in fees a true bargain, especially at the time when people were listed 09 blade trackies for over 10k on Fx classifieds.
So three weeks later after looking daily, I seen two bikes at Manheim that had caught my eye , one a 2010 Blade, damaged subframe and a few scratched plastic, the second was a 2010 zx10r with no dash and smash rear end.
So on the day of the auction I went with a little straight edge ruler (just to check things if I thought anything was bent etc), my iphone fully charged to search parts and $500.00 in my pocket.
Well the zx10r was like new the headers were still that golden colour, engine oil was still gold, the tyres still with painted lines running down the centre of the tyre, it just seemed someone had riden out of showroom and dropped it. Where the blade had more damage, subframe, rear wheel.
Well the auction started and the zx10r was first up, the auctioneer started the bid at $5k and the room was silent, he tried to pump the auction up but no bidders, so he tried $4.5k still with no luck and now he asked for anyone to start him off so someone the background started it at $3.5k, which I couldn’t believe my eyes the bike was like new , had a key ,all the metal parts looked straight and un-touched.
After almost pissing myself (as I never been involved in an auction before) made a counter offer of 3.8k.
Before I new it the auctioneer went “ first call 3.8k, second call 3.8k, third and final call 3.8k” and out of the blue this dirty bastard screamed out $3.9k..I was spewing, but didn’t let this prick think he was getting this bike as I was already pissing myself with fear so I up it to $4k. Which was the winning bid and I was pumped, couldn’t wait to get it home and start pulling it apart.
The thing is Ebay can be your friend, one thing I’ve found is something’s are listed on ebay motors that aren’t listed on your standard Ebay. Use companies like shipit.com that lets you create an USA address so you can buy from yanks who won’t ship to Australia, and then help you ship it to your door.
Deal direct with suppliers, the internet is your friend.

If you aren’t doing anything and you are close to bankstown just pop in and have a look and even if you go online and see what this Suzuki goes for.

I have to say I’d do it again and maybe next year a gen4 might come my way!!!!

If you have any question just ask or Pm me, I’m more than happy to help.

I kind of like the concept of buying a write off and building it yourself. I've done both, ironically the write off only had 700ks on it but it was the one that blew up. I think that had a fair bit to do with abuse by a certain 21 yo son of mine.

The one I bought built up was a bit of a shitter when I got it as the suspension was knackered (I didn't know). I spent a bucket on it and sold it for about 4k less than it cost me all up with suspension etc but it was a good bike when I sold it and it's still going strong I believe.

Trackys have lost a lot of value over the last few years as have write offs with the new laws in NSW so either way you can do well. If you buy a ready made just make sure you do your research on it.

Good luck with it.

I wouldn't worry about was it ridden hard or soft. Fact is they are designed to be ridden hard and unless you are buying a model that has known issues it is more about bad luck than good management.

Personally I would always buy what someone else has spent the money as they never get their money back. I just paid $3k for an 01 GSXR600 with an 03 motor with less then 10k on the motor, with the front forks rebuilt by Terry Hay, and a about $1500 spent on the rear shock and spring, I also got a spare set of front forks with too much money spent on them with new springs and a spare set of wheels with near new rotors worth over $700 new.

The only down side is that it wasn't done by you
