Legal to drill hole in plate?

Post by TyM2Go »

Hey guy's
Just wondering if it is legal to drill a hole in the liscense plate. At the moment the plate doesn't fit the fender eliminator and i dont want to use those plastic strap things to hold em in place.

Regards
Fitzy

I believe it is illegal to interfere or alter a number plate but If it is just a hole up the top which won't cause visibility issues and it won't be noticed then I would do it.

So...your worried about a hole being illegal in the plate but you have a fender eliminator which is...ummm ...illegal! bduh.gif

By all means drill away, take care not to drill through the ECU tho' unless you want instant world wide infamy. ;)

BTW I hear those eliminators are quite dangerous

Dangerous how so?
Only thing i can think of is launching pebbles off the road at the person behind me or a water tail in the wet.

Found a solution got a metal bracket drilled 4 holes so i don't have to drill the plate.

When I got my ZRX12,the 1st 6months or so 3 plates split/cracked diagonally from top to side, when the 'standard' corner plate holes were used .One plate disappeared totally somewhere between Tenterfield and Casino!!
Eventually i drilled 2 holes two holes 30mm or so closer together. End of problem, and no cops have ever mentioned it,and unfortunately they've had a fair chance while we,"having a chat" , roadside. ;) Weird, cause was never a prob on my 147k ZRX11.

Just drill the holes...... worry about if anything is said.

Yeah go ahead and drill...

If you get pulled up for it just say you had to do it because the original holes wouldn't allow fitment to the FE and show him...

So... a fender eliminator and another thread about crash knobs.................... thought you had decided to invest in rider training before spending money on shoes to match your hand bag?????

If it is illegal someone should get onto the rta or whatever they are called know and get them to drill the holes in the right spot for whatever vechicle they need to be to fitted too.Somehow i would think they would change their attitude if they had to be custom made to suit. But if they are fitted to something thats illegal to start with they will probably book you for that and not the holes you have drilled.

Fitzy ...

NSW plates are notoriously difficult to drill ...

make sure you use one of these ...

Rightio   . Anyway's Didn't need to drill the plate found some metal plates drilled that and made it fit. I didn't spend money on this mate got it free as compensation, MGP growler arrived damaged about 6-7 week's back. The crash nobs are incase i do come of at the ARC which will be towards mid nov- end nov, the day's they have in oct i have exam's or doctor's appointment's

Stupid question here but why are fender eliminator's illegal,
mudflaps? safety of little pebbles/ water tails?- if so car's that are in front of me in the wet and their water tail is shocking as i can't see shit unless i change lanes or slow down.
45 deg angle?- covered that
illuminated number plate - covered that
reflector- covered that

Here is a tip mate.....

Just do whatever mods you want. Everything will be alright

This approach has worked well for me on every bike I have ridden since 1979. It will work for you too.

Now I'm confused...I always thought the 45 deg rule applied but VSI 28 shows different...
