L-plater's licence suspended - Liverpool
Wednesday, 05 September 2012 06:02:10 PM

Police have suspended the licence of a learner motorcyclist and confiscated the machine’s registration plates after it was allegedly caught speeding through a school zone in Sydney’s southwest this morning.

Around 9am (Wednesday 5 September 2012), police were conducting speed enforcement duties in a school zone on Elizabeth Drive at Liverpool.

Officers allegedly detected a Kawasaki motorcycle travelling at nearly 90kph in the 40kph zone.

Police stopped the motorcycle a short distance away and spoke with the 20-year-old rider.

The man had only held his learner’s motorcycle licence for two months.

Police have suspended the man’s licence for six months and issued a speeding fine worth $2296.

Officers also used new legislation to confiscate the man’s motorcycle registration plates.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Operation’s Commander, Superintendent Stuart Smith said this sort of behaviour is not only irresponsible but incredibly dangerous.

“Highway patrol officers from Liverpool Highway Patrol have done well to prevent what could have been a tragic outcome for either the rider or the most vulnerable road users, our children.

“Motorcyclists need to appreciate that speeding can have tragic outcomes. Already this year, 48 riders have lost their lives on the state’s roads.”

I'm ok with the suspension and ok with the size of the fine

I'm not ok with the plate confiscation. I don't think that's appropriate at all. Now he can't sell his bike, while he can't ride it and has a big fine to pay. If he had the rego plates, he could sell the bike to pay the fine and then wouldn't have an unrideable bike sitting around. This way it seems much more tempting to steal someone else's plates and ride unregistered and unlicenced, since you can't get rid of the bike and it would just be sitting there anyway. Just doesn't seem to make sense to put a roadblock in the way to him selling the bike - I would've thought they'd prefer to encourage him to get rid of motorcycles, not force him to keep one that would be illegal to use!

Agree Cath.

I feel sorry for the guy that fine is too big! I rekon you could do some serious physical injury to someone and not get that kind of fine or punishment, and this guys hasn't actually hurt anyone.

None of them around our place have lights. Just goes to show they care more about the revenue than kid's lives. If it was really about making kids safer we'd have every possible warning device you could think of as you enter a school zone

I think the cops actaully being on the street is a good thing. If it was a road side hidden camera... 2 weeks later he would have received a letter in the post advising him of his dangerous actions... too bad for anyone he injured or killed in the meantime.

Cops on the beat - a worthwhile investment.
Roadside 'Safety' camera partols - a worthwhile revenue raising exercise (for no-body but the state government)
