Rear brake friction on 2012 zx10r

Post by Juggy »

G'day,

When I first picked my bike up it had a serious warped disc which the dealer replaced immeidiately for me.
Now I have had the bike back there on 2 subsequent occasions with a grinding and whooping sound coming from it. At low speed it will make a whooping sort of sound and if I have it up on the paddock stand while I'm doing my chain there is a distinct grinding rubbing sound as if the brake pad is touching a fairly large section of the disc as it goes around.
Has anyone else had this or a similar problem?
Maccarocks your expertise may be needed here :D

Thanks

Sounds like old pads have not bedded into the new disc yet.

Hi Juggy....

Well I am surprised..!! I reckon it would be pretty hard to get 2 warped discs in a row, (but not impossible) and it is not unusual to have the discs just touching the pads as you spin the wheels on the paddock stands, as long as they are not dragging hard on the disc, but I have to agree with Wattie, you may have been unlucky enough to get a second warped disc... I mean the dealer could not have fitted it wrong (could they..?? :? )

Both the rears on my ZX10's spins freely, but then I rarely use my rear brake, especially on the track.. I probably use it more when slowly moving through the traffic on the road... Double check that the pads are sitting in correctly.. I dont think they could be out but just check to be sure.. and if it is still grabbing.. on and off, go for a ride and drag that rear brake for a while to warm those pads up and really bed them in... If you feel the rear brake lever pulsating (like feeling like it is moving a bit up and down) then the disc is definitely warped...

Then back to the dealer for a new one.... ;)

Hope this helps..

I had a similar thing with new rear pad but my rotor has at least had a 1-2mm used off it. I had to get at least 10 hard brake session on it before it went perfectly smooth.

When i first put the pad in you could see where the disc was getting rubbed un-evenly by the pad and I to thought my rotor was warped.

I am running a sintered pad in the rear but i guess due to

1. When bedding in the rear brake it has no where near as much load on it when braking compared to the front.

2. because the caliper floats to a extent it's putting pressure on the higher areas of the disc pad? also the rear disc is floating like to front?

anyway I thought I was going crazy and thought stuff this let's give this rotor a good flogging and got on the highway went from 100-0 over and over only using rear brake (allowed for cooling time between runs). Hey presto all fixed.

Stupid thing is I never use the rear so my other solution was to remove the rear rotor & caliper if i couldn't get rid of my warped issue  :kuda:

Not sure which one worked but I tried both and the problem seems to be gone for now.
Thanks for the help
