Sailing
Well we're going to finally do it, (well pretty soon anyway). We are selling our house and buying a Sailboat. This is something I've done before and it will be a great adventure. We're looking at a 43 foot Columbia, which is a boat I've had experience with before. Plenty of room and very seaworthy for the long hauls. Cheers.

Re: Sailing
Almost did this 20 years ago to chase surf around the world, had a mate offering a 43ft ketch that had done lots of pacific tours, ended up taking a different route, but would have been awesome.
Best of luck, safe sailing, and I hope its painted green

Re: Sailing
Lots of water between San Diego and Australia. I'm going to try a few shorter trips first, like Hawaii. Then if I miss Hawaii I might end up in Australia. I still have my old sextant from the seventies and will have to practice my celestial navigation skills for awhile before any long cruises. Cheers!!ducati_paul wrote:So when can we expect you to sail into Sydney?

You might need a bigger boat. How many Jimmy's can you get on a 43 footer

It's really all about standing around drinking Dave's beer.

Re: Sailing
Here are two of the Sailboats we are looking at. They are both in San Diego and my daughter lives there so she can take a look before we go down and waste our time. Once we pick a boat I need to have it surveyed by a licensed surveyor to check hull and structural integrety. One is a Columbia 43 the other an Erickson 38. Both excellent boats if they were well maintained.

Re: Sailing
Awesome plan ! Drop into Western Samoa next year and I will pop over for a couple of Jimmies .
Ummmm let me see
Re: Sailing
That was going to be my next stop after Hawaii. I don't know about next year, it may be the year after. My cruising skills are a bit rusty and will probably spend next year coastal hopping then going to Hawaii in 2014. I don't even have a sailboat yet.the kid wrote:Awesome plan ! To those who have cruised, even after you get a boat it takes awhile to get it cruise ready for a long journey. You don't just buy a boat and go. Well you can but it's not too smart.
I hope to get to Australia as well. That was my goal when I was 15 years or so old, (back in the early sixties). Cheers!!
Oh by the way sailing and booze mix well only in moderation. On a long cruise a couple of glasses of wine is as far as I'll go. In port is a different story.
Re: Sailing
Greetings! The trip is posponed. I had congestive heart failure on August 20th and spent 11 days in the hospital. All is good now and I'm almost back to normal. Life is always exciting and it was a good experience, we all have to die of something but I guess that was not the way for me yet. Too bad, I hear the booze and women are unlimited in the after life. Cheers all!

Re: Sailing
Hope you recover well mate. Quick question what happens if there's rough seas will that boat be able to over come say 2-4 meter waves?
