They help to stop your vertebra being crushed/ground into the bitumen or surounding scenery in the event you fall off.

A good idea really but you have to go to the shop and try them on to get the right fit.

Most Jackets have a pad built in very Few actually have a spine Protector. Phil at highside leathers in acacia Ridge makes them, a few of us bought them n i wear mine most days now. They are'nt as flash but we also got a decent discount n I feel totally safe wearing ti to protector my spine in the worse ever happens.

Bad idea to wear one for support as it will only make your back weaker; then when you really need the strength (fall awkwardly, etc) play-time will be over for good!

If you have back pain you should do isolated exercises to strengthen it, or if that's too boring try Tai Chi or a southern oriental martial art like any southern Kung Fu, with a good instructor though otherwise you'll just reck everything. I don't know of any other sport-kinda-things that'll help, swimming doesn't do much despite what people think.

Failing that if you still get pain riding you'll needa get raised bars, lowered seat or a new bike - That's the exact reason I got my new bike cheap from a mate, haha.
ZXR"900" - In pieces... again.
Another engine gone but at least the purple and pink are still there, oh yeah.

Yep. I am only getting one for protection in a fall. I kind of like the use of my legs and arms, and don't fancy losing my mobility. Not that it is absolute protection, but some is better than none.

So if anyone else has any input on a good back protector, go for it...

I bought a whole set of armour from Phil too. I had bought some second hand leathers that didn't have armour and got Phil to make elbows, knees and back protection for me. My back protector doesn't have a kidney belt setup though, but I am sure that Phil would have the skills to set it up with one for you. He's a good guy and could probably work out something for what you need at half the cost.

You just have to make sure the lenght is right from the base of the spine to the back of you neck then stick your leathers together and sit on the bike with it on in the crouch position(my experiance anyway) cause thats how you have to wear them and they have to be comortable.

They seem to do what they are suposed to really well. :D

Well when i have fallen off or maybe thats the wrong word cause i ride them all the way into the bitumen I never had a back protector but i do now just need something for me hip.

It has sort of a molded tailpeice that covers your tailbone and shoulder and waist straps and is just a tad short for me so i have a longer body or something but when i put it on with the whole lot zipped over the top my leathers get a bit tight and you can really feel it pushing into your back and i would have to say if i landed on it i would probably bounce rather than bruise/crush my spine.

and yes a reasonable martial arts class is better than a trip to the chiropracter. :D

Ahh...ok then.

I am still not sure whether the Knox actually does offer less protection, or if it just looks that way because of the leather pants they've got on in one of those pics.

Maybe I should order one of each and send the one I don't want back
