ZX10R Akrapovic Slip On

Post by KEL10R »

Hi all,
new to this site so i am not sure if this has been covered before, just bought a new Akrapovic Slip on for my 2012 ZX10R, talked to the dealer about it but he wanted to charge me $166 more for the slip on than i ended up paying for it ($891 vs $725) and wants to charge over $200 to install it, he claims it needs to be tuned, decibel tuned and fitted correctly.
Now i am sure i have read in several Magazines (Fast Bikes, Performance Bikes) that because the 2012 ZX10R has a cat and O2 sensor and the slip on goes on after these their is no tuning required as the bike can adjust itself as it is after the cat and o2 sensor, do you guys have any experience with this?
Thanks in advance for any help
Cheers,
Kel

Do it yourself.. it is simple.. and $200 to fit a slip on.. WTF..??

On this model the cat will stay, the exhaust valve will stay, the o2 sensor will stay and the exhaust servo will stay.. nothing to do but unbolt the muffler and replace it with the slip on.. I am talking 2 bolts..!! So that's $100 per bolt the dealer wants to charge you...!! (oh replace the heat shield as well.. so maybe 3 more small bolts)

With this Akro shorty, running through the cat you can take the DB reducer straight out as it wont be loud at all... you will see that the stock muffler is straight through design as well.. so you are really only making it look better, it wont sound much different.. and so I ask the question, "What re-tuning will the dealer have to do"..?? except rev it up after pushing the starter button..?? I hate shifty dealers... :x

Are you in Melbourne,..?? Ride it over the Hoppers Crossing and I will do it for you AND give you a complimentary cappuccino for nothing..!!!!!!!! ;) Doh.. I just read you are in NSW..!!! :)

thanks for the offer mate, downloaded the instructions from the akrapovic site and it looks fairly straightforward but if i have any drama i may take u up on the offer.
For sure the more i think about it the more it seems like bull he was talking, i can understand if i had a power commander and full system...but a slip on,hmmm

Well I put the Akrapovic slip-on on today,5 bolts all lined up like clockwork, copper paste and ceramic paste all supplied with exhaust, def not worth $200 to install  , took the DB reducer out too thanks Maccarocks,it had a spot weld on the 8mm nut which just about fell off as i took it out of the box  and sounds better :kuda:

Try to get a link pipe with the os sensor socket a it simplifes remapping. My Akra pipe (from Jonno) has it but I don't know if this is standard. Another thread talked about Yoshi not always having them. It needs a Power Commander or similar if you remove the servo connections as you do when you remove the Cat. It also needs a Servo Buddy and an OS emulator of some sort - either an Eliminator if there is no OS socket in the link pipe or another (forget Help me guys!) if you have the rear sensors like I do.

Ron at Flywheels Sydney is installing the kit and doing the dyno mapping THIS WEEK so I'll report back.

Yeah STG have the link pipe for $169, they offered it for $109 when i bought the exhaust from them, don't want to go that far though as i will then have do the PowerCommander and tune, and i am quite happy with just the slip on, i did this (full system) with my 08 Speed Triple with the Factory Arrow System and while it sounded great i was sick of talking to " the Bill" all the time and showing them it was a genuine Factory System (Triumph and Arrow are in bed together for their Aftermarket Exhaust), all good though i am happy with this pipe as it is.

OS Optimiser was the word I was trying to say (it was late after all). Here's a couple of pics of work in progress. You can see the OS sensor in its socket. It seems the socket is standard for Akra link pipes. The mapping is still a challenge as everyone says. I think Ron now has 3 cyclinders running!
