whats normal price to lace a wheel?
hey guys looking at getting another dirt bike after i sold my KLX650 about 6-9 months ago just looking at prices for motard rims (built) and seen the prices of $1500 an upwards the wheels would cost as much as the bike i plan on buying well close enough so just wondering how much will it cost to lace up a wheel? i will be looking at ordering a motard rim from ebay and a hub from america to keep cost a lower so would need the wheels laced and order the spokes and nipples

What bike are you putting it on???
I have cheaper rims on my ktm525 and never had an issue except....... They were to fat. They were 5.5 inch wide which made a 150 tyre flatten out a hell of a lot. Wasnt a big issue but when cranked you did run off the edge a bit so you just needed to catch it.
For my next dirty I will be getting a 5inch wide rear rim.
Just a thought, not a major either way.

Re: whats normal price to lace a wheel?
hey mate looking at a WR400F as there cheap and around the 2k mark also seen the odd ktm 520 for around 2-2.5k which i would love even more i just cant stretch the bank for anything newer atm i would have went with a road bike but after riding various bikes from my old ZXR250's to my R6 i get numb hands and arms after riding for an hour and i usually do 200-250km round trips down the coast along the beaches and the scenic route so i thought a motard would be ideally suitable for my needs and i have loved bush bashing since i was 11 when i first put a leg over a dirt bike

Re: whats normal price to lace a wheel?
It won't be anything like as cheap as $686 to build up a pair of rims from just parts. Unless you supply the rims, the spokes and the hub to the wheel-builder. Then you may be paying around $300-400 for the pair. Unless you know what to order - it is way better to leave the spoke ordering to the wheel builder as they know *exactly* what is required for any hub/rim combination.gazza2008au wrote:.....$686 for a set of rims

The hubs and rims must have the same number of holes - they will probably be 40-hole rims but could be 36. They need to match.
Darryl is doing up a few sets of wheels for me right at the moment - the costs are basically panning out as follows:
Rim - $200
Spokes - $150
Labour - $150
that is per wheel. So you are looking around $500 per wheel if you just supply the hubs.

Re: whats normal price to lace a wheel?
thanks for the replies i forgot to mention i called a sydney wheel guy and he said it will be $210 to supply the spokes and lace a wheel thats if i supply the rim and hub but the other quote i mentioned from the ebay dealer was PM from him saying how much each wheel cost in parts and to build the wheels he has complete built wheels for sale http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Complete-FRO ... 20c677467c
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Complete-REA ... 20c645bc61
i dont know the strength of the wheel i wont be racing just causal rides and the odd mono up the street

Re: whats normal price to lace a wheel?
its worth dropping the coin on the best spokes you can afford - I am getting h/d spokes which add a bit to the cost, but should do the job. All the wheels will be used on track bikes. That quote from the bloke in Sydney is pretty good for supply of spokes and also lacing up the rims.......
I guess for almost $700 to supply the bits for the wheels is about right - add another $300 labour to lace them up and you are looking at a neat $1k for the pair. This seems to be about industry standard for most sets of wheels I have seen. Unless you fork out for Talon hubs which will add a bit to the cost

Re: whats normal price to lace a wheel?
that is really cheap for a complete set of motard wheels.......really cheap. I wonder what the quality is like and where they source the hubs & bearings etc ?
If they did a dual disc front hub, that would be cheapest way to put fat spoked 17" wheels on any number of old race bikes....
