Need Help with coils

Post by map »

Hi Ksrc Members

I have come back to riding after a spell of 20 years.
I would like some help.
I have bought a 1993 zzr 600 e when doing some maintance on the bike and have found that there are two different sets of coils.
one is the original one and the other one looks like it is from a different make of bike.
The question is can I use a set of zx6r stick coils in there place i know that I would have to modify the wiring.

hope this all makes sence (not good at the typing) But love reading the forum.

Cheers

I have been doing a bit of reading about this mod - it is something that interests me *a whole lot* for one of the bikes I have in the 4th.....

You need to make sure the primary resistance of the stick coils is the same or slightly less than the OEM coils. You don't want more resistance because this will eventually cause issues with the igniter (sender) coils.

From what I have read, you should also try and get some stick coils that also come with the associated wiring. This will allow you to make up a small adapter loom, which can plug into the wires for the standard coils, and then plug into the top of the stick coils.

I am thinking about this exact mod for my GPZ1000RX. It uses the old-style coils - which are bolted up to the frame and look really ugly - with standard plug leads and plug caps. All sources of ignition problems......

The RX motor is essentially identical to the later ZZR and ZRX motors, so they already have a plug that is located deep within a plug well. Using stick coils on this motor makes a whole lot of sense to me. Your ZZR would be in much the same boat I reckon.....

I'll keep looking into this one - the RX is a few bikes down the food chain at the moment, but a mod like this is not really that difficult at all from what I have read ? The go seems to be using ZX10R stick coils, I can't see any reason that ZX6R stick coils wouldn't work either - in fact you could probably use stick coils from any bike (eg CBR600RR etc) as long as the primary resistance is correct.

For the 600E you can use any of these ... and possibly some others, but these are known to work.

GSX-R 600-750-1000-1300, 1999-2004

ZX-9R, 1998-2003

ZX-12R, all years

ZX-10R, 2004~2007

ZX-6R & 636

Z1000

CBR600, 2003~2006

Thanks Daisy and Gosling1 for the info
I have made up the lume and wired it in series
how do i check the resistance of the coils

Cheers

thanks for the list Daisy - did this come from another forum or somewhere ?

Map - to measure the primary resistance of a coil you just put an ohmmeter across the +ve and -ve terminals (the +12v supply side and the signal input side) - not sure off the top of my head what a ZZR600 specs are, but expect 3 ohm would be close to the mark. If you change this to a 5 ohm coil, this will eventually stuff the sender coils. Going under the stock spec - say to 2.5 or 2 ohm - this will be fine.

Yeah, a Canadian guy called Claude is the font of knowlege for all the ZZR stuff. There is an updated list that several of us have added to, but I couldn't locate it with a quick search. 1400GTR work too - I have a set here that previously lived in my 600.

I have 2 sets - with looms - that I'd part with for not much if anyone wants them. 1400GTR and 636. They don't fit the nine because it has smaller diameter openings in the rocker cover. :(

The resistance of a coil oringal coil was 3.1 the resistance of the other coils was 3.7
The resistance of the zx6 coils measured at 3.1 so all good
Wired up the coils it took the zzr600 a bit to start the frist time put it down to fuel and flat battery
Now it start well every time, seems to run smoother than before.

Thanks daisy and gosling1
