An 18-year-old driver is facing serious traffic charges after allegedly being clocked driving at more than 180kph in a 100kph zone in central Victoria.

The man, who has held his probationary licence for just one month, said he was travelling at 183kph to test his new late-model Holden Commodore station wagon, police said.

He was driving about 6pm (AEST) on Sunday on the Redesdale Road between Kyneton and Heathcote and has been charged with speeding and other traffic offences.

The man, from Redesdale, is expected to face court at a later date.

The thing that is most annoying is that a few years ago two bikes got sprung at a touch over 160mph and got 3 months jail. One of them ended up spending it in maximum security

I believe police should get lighter sentences, they shoud get heavier as they should know better and are in a position of such responsibility
