Buying first bike

At 6ft or taller you might want to look at a larger capacity LAMS approved bike or a motard. I struggled on a 250 back in the day that they were the only thing you could ride and you might find them a bit small too.

I have a work colleague with 650 hyoflungdung, in his own words "I wouldn't wish this bike on my worst enemy". Told him not to buy it.

He has managed to do 14k in the last 1.5 yrs, he bought it new. The bike has been back to the dealer 5 times for warranty related items.

Anywho, Nelso is right 6foot forget about a 2fiddy

Other 600 LAMS approved bike should you not go for a kwaka are spewzuki SV650s, crapaha FZ6R; there both decent but we wont say that too loudly.

Pretty much all those 600 LAMS bikes mentioned can be unrestricted via a ECU mod change & or cable/plate modification.

I'm 6ft and my first bike was a zxr250. It was definately big enough for me - see pic

ZXR250 & ninja 250R are two different size frames.

Yes I know, a couple of people are generalising that 250's are too small though... I reckon that the zxr250 and the new zx10 are about the same size

Im 6ft and found the Ninja 250r too small. Get a dirt squirter and eventually a motard setup. You can then go anywhere and will learn to wheelie everywhere you go!

my son is 6'5'' and rides a supermotard (XR400SM). he's dropped it once and it was cheap to fix. really good first bike.
The suzuki drz400sm was another option and these are still available new.

Seriously though, having watched and participated in Tim's learning process on his GS500 I think that particular category of bike (including the ER5) is excellent for a learner. They have nice, usable power, they aren't the latest sexiest looking thing so you won't feel compelled to waste money modifying it, they are probably cheaper to insure than a zxrcbrgsx250rrrrrrrrninja, you can throw them down the road, pick them up and ride them away in most circumstances with a minimum of damage (ref Tim), they're really easy to throw up on the back of a trailer and tie down when you do crash them and can't ride away (ref Tim) and when you're ready for something different you'll probably get your money back (ref Tim). they are very maneouverable and easy to steer and on top of all that as your skills improve they'll keep up with most things on the road if you can ride it half well.

You can probably pick them up reasonably cheap which will leave you with more dough to spend on training or quality riding gear which you'll then probably own for 10+ years.

Good luck with it, it's an exciting process for a youngster.

go the ER6n, you can get them in lams form and they have enough to keep you happy and are great to learn on, i am the same high but about 20kgs heavier and this bike is a perfect fit, the ninja 250 will seem like a good fit at first but trust me you will get extreamly bored quick and go in the search for more power, but on the er6n you will learn on it and when you want more power you can de-ristric it and have a full 650cc under you! you can pick up a good second hand one of these cheap, do your research and get plenty of good riding gear and wear it all the time even if its for a run down the shops, you will defs drop your bike it happens to everyone so get some crash knobs it will have you hundreds to thousands of $$ , and make sure you keep us all up dated with what you got and make sure you stick around here because there is alot you can learn

Thanks huffy, can someone provide a link to the ER6n on bikesales.com.au, i cant find any that are lams approved. and im from toowoomba an hour or so from brissy.

Il always make sure i wear my gear, i said in another post i get shivers when i see people riding with no gear! lol

Would definately recommend these over a 250 for longevity! Look for the L models as they are LAMS approved
