changing frames
Would i have any problems changing the frame and getting rec reg on the dirt bike with one a frame from o/seas? The bike has only been on closed circuits so has never needed to be registered, but the guy who owned it had a big off, which snapped the steering stop off and dented the frame. The forks and so on have been fixed, the bike rides true and the frame has no cracks/creases and is still straight, but i want to change the frame so there is a steering stop-not forks hitting the frame......and i found a really good one from the states for just over $200 door to door!!!

Re: changing frames
Can't weld one back on? Wont cost much.
I'd say yes there will be a problem getting Rego, unless rec Rego has different laws.

Re: changing frames
well looks like welding is the answer (already decided that it was the better and easier solution, i was just being picky) after about an hours hold to vic roads, i would have to treat it like an imported vehicle and get import certificates, engineers inspection and so on.

Re: changing frames
You can swap any amount of engines and it's OK, but want to change the frame and it becomes a whole different ball game in Vic.
The way it was explained to me was that the frame is "the bike" and all records are based around that. In effect, it is now a different vehicle, despite everything else that might match the engine number. And yes, the ongoing list of engineering certificates and approvals etc.

Re: changing frames
There are a couple of ways to do it. In Vic, you can rec rego a MX bike which does not carry a compliance plate provided it has a lighting kit fitted. Headlight and tailight operable. Thererore, you could use the new frame provided you have a receipt for it and that the bike has a lighting kit.
The second option, it to restamp the Vin from your old frame and transfer the compliance plate over.
