Crackdown on noisy cars after residents are left exhausted

Nicole Hasham
February 10, 2012

SOME customers who drive their cars into the workshop of Merrylands exhaust specialist Bob Moore have just one request: "I want it loud. Very loud."

After 28 years in business, Mr Moore has turned scores of factory-issue cars into roaring, deep-throttle beasts by modifying mufflers and enlarging exhaust pipes. Many customers want better performance and fuel economy. But some just want plain old noise.

"We try and satisfy what they want and steer them towards a better way of doing it,'' Mr Moore said. ''Some people just have no comprehension of what's legal."

But authorities are increasingly keen to help them understand.

A blitz by police and environment officials on Saturday night in Cowper Wharf Road, Woolloomooloo, fined 30 drivers.

In the past financial year, the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) suspended 386 vehicle registrations for engine noise offences - the highest number since the state's testing regime was ramped up in 2007.

Engine noise from cars built after 1983 must not exceed 90 decibels - the level of a lawnmower or an orchestral crescendo. Older cars and motorbikes are allowed up to an extra 10 decibels. Around 900 reports of noisy vehicles were made to the environment hotline last year, slightly down on previous years.

After two complaints, a vehicle owner must report to one of eight testing stations across the state.

The EPA's acting chief environmental regulator, Mark Gifford, said engine noise at Bondi, Brighton-le-Sands and La Perouse was worse in summer, when people congregate and "parade around in their cars".

The problem has eased in the traditional western Sydney hotspots of Granville and Campbelltown, but there has been little improvement in the inner east.

Andrew Woodhouse and other residents of Macleay Street, Potts Point, have long complained that modified cars and motorbikes en route to Kings Cross disrupt their sleep. "It's a low rumbling noise and it's very difficult to eliminate even with triple-glazing [of windows]," Mr Woodhouse said.

But the driver of a modified Ford Falcon GT, who wished only to be known as Paul, was unperturbed.

The 29 year old from Padstow has installed a $3200 sports exhaust system to improve performance and allow him to be "a bit of a show pony." "A lot of guys don't want quiet cars … [they want] that nice V8 note. But unfortunately, that doesn't flow well with the authorities," he said.

Growler's on a ninja 2fiddy is painful to the ears!

As for being pulled over; if you ride around cop bait areas with the rest of the sik kents being a tool, expect your ass to be sodomised.

well i don't ride with "sick cunts" i ride with my mate on his Aprilia 125 or by my self
that plus i don't see any other value for money exhausts when it comes to noise yoshi and akra both around the 700 range where as mgp round 300

correct me if im wrong but i was told 99% of aftermarket exhausts are illegal for road use
