) I heard a bike, so I turned to look, as ya do, just to witness the bike brake. The backend lifted to almost vertical, I assumed he released the front brake because it came down, then ran into the side of a Subaru which flicked him over the bonnet, full rotation in the air and landed on one leg then his back. I bolted across the road and I told my colleague to call 000 and take photo’s. He didn’t move to much but was conscious. Talking to him calmly, there were a couple of people there screaming hysterically (I politely asked them to go stop traffic
) I asked him his name after a moment he said Josh *** when he came to realise what happened he was ‘very’ angry. Josh recognised the driver of the car who was standing over him asking if he was ok. This enraged him. Myself and another guy tried to encourage him to keep his helmet on and lay still, but he threw his gloves off and then helmet and tried to get up. I tried to catch him, but it was more like I broke his fall when he fell down. (solid bloke) He tried again to get up, the other bloke and myself simultaneously said ‘take your time’ and helped him off the road. Again we tried to sit him down, but he just wanted a piece of the driver. The driver just remained silent and watching from a distance. I asked Josh to show me his leg (so he had to sit down) he sat down, his ankle was like a balloon and knee was swelling. * I was dumfounded, he had dress shoes, thin black dress pants, leather jacket, leather gloves and there wasn’t a scuff or hole in or on anything! (few marks on his lid) Then the traffic started running over his bikes plastics on the road. You couldn’t hear the traffic, just the crunching and snapping. Josh almost started crying and blurted out my bike, my ***bike, it's a limited edition (it was canary yellow and black R1), and his helmet was brand new (not a scratch on the iridium visor tho!). We asked if there was anyone we could call for him, but he said no.
Just at that time some random came over with a (used) drink bottle asking everyone if they wanted water. I did suggest he shouldn’t. He then started rummaging through his jacket (shaking pretty bad) he pulled out a pouch of tobacco. I said to him that will make you pass out, he put it back and got up again and limped over to the driver. Josh then apologised to the driver for yelling at him and shook his hand, then sat down again.
One patrol showed, took the bike off the road and moved the car, but just monitored the situation, no statements or anything. Ambos showed up not long after and suggested he go to hospital, he refused over and over. The other guy who was helping out left. I looked at my colleague and she was pale and sitting quietly. I asked her if she was ok and she said she was, she just needed a minute. On the train later she said that tried to get pic’s but she was shaking too much.
A second patrol came and started a report. Josh called a mate to come get his bike and the ambo’s finally talked him into going to hospital. I gave him all the details from the driver I had collected including insurance, plates etc, he thanked me and was bundled off.
The driver approx in his mid 60’s was performing an illegal U’turn in Finders street. I was thinking about it last night and he may not have seen the bike because the bike was in the right lane and the car driver may not have seen past his front seat passenger.
Irrespective, he was doing an illegal turn. Peek hour traffic.
I’m glad I stayed after to give a statement because the other two chicks who hung around, blurted to police the bike was speeding and riding recklessly and in the same breath said they didn’t see the impact, just him flying through the air.
He wasn’t. The police agreed and said that given he had just taken off stationary from the corner and is injuries, it appeared he wasn’t at speed. They also said that there wasn’t any dispute from the driver what had happened or who was at fault.
Very lucky, could have been much worse.
